Title: Nelson Mandela dies

Nelson Mandela dies
2
Nelson Mandela, 95, died Thursday. The nation's
first black president battled health issues in
recent years, including a recurring lung
infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.
Around the world, memorials popped up, where
flowers and candles were laid in front of murals
bearing his likeness. In Washington, crowds
gathered in front of the South African Embassy.
Imprisoned for nearly three decades for his fight
against apartheid, he emerged from prison in
1990, determined to unite the nation. In doing
so, Mandela helped South Africa break the
shackles of racial segregation and do away with
white minority rule. Instead of anger and
bitterness at the white government that
imprisoned him, he chose forgiveness and
reconciliation. His call to avoid vengeance
inspired the world. It also set him on a path of
evolving roles, from freedom fighter, to
prisoner, to a world symbol of the struggle
against racial oppression. He became the father
of modern South Africa. And four years after he
left prison, he became the nation's first black
president, cementing his place in the
consciousness of the nation and the world. Events
will be held over the next 10 days, culminating
in a state funeral to be broadcast worldwide and
a private farewell for those closest to him.

In Other News
  • Los Angeles Authorities have arrested a man
accused of swiping a piece of the wrecked sports
car that "Fast Furious" star Paul Walker was
riding in when he died in a fiery crash Saturday.
The theft occurred at a stop light as the charred
2005 Porsche Carrera GT was being removed from
the accident scene on a flatbed tow truck late
    Saturday. Authorities arrested 18-year-old
    Jameson Witty for the crime.
  • Dozens of short-finned pilot whales moved
Thursday to slightly deeper water off Florida's
Everglades National Park, raising hope a day
after the mass stranding saw 11 of the mammals
    die. Wildlife officials were cautiously
optimistic that the 35 remaining whales would
make it into deep open waters but warned that the
mammals still had miles to go. Wildlife officials
are unsure how long the pod of whales has been
stranded or why. Fishermen spotted the pod of 51
whales, several of which had beached themselves,
on Tuesday night in a remote area accessible only
by boat off the west coast of the Everglades.
Eleven of the whales have died, including four
found in "poor condition" and euthanized, and
five more went missing overnight. The whales are
very communal and stay together, and the fact
that the remaining pod moved away from shore
overnight could help their chances of survival.
Rescuers used about 15 boats to herd the whales
toward more open waters in the Gulf of Mexico.
Mass strandings by pilot whales are not
altogether uncommon in Florida. In 2012, nearly
two dozen pilot whales stranded and beached
themselves. In 2011, 23 pilot whales stranded and
    beached themselves.
