What do you think of when you hear that a food
has fat in it?
THINK! PAIR! SHARE!
3
You might think that the food is not good for you
or that its unhealthy! But your diet SHOULD
have a certain amount of fat in it!
4
The fact is we all need fats. Fats help us in
lots of ways!
5
What does fat do?
FAT helps our bodies stay warm in cold weather protects our organs - like a cushion acts as the body's reserve tank of energy helps hormones to keep blood pressure steady helps keep skin and hair healthy gives some vitamins a place to stay and helps them get round in the blood to where the body wants them.
6
How much fat is good for you? Nutritionists,
people who study foods and diets, say that only a
small amount of fat is necessary each day.
However infants and small children need more fat.
It keeps a child's body temperature consistent,
helps digest vitamins A, D, E and K, helps
develop and cushion internal organs, is needed
for brain development and assists in general
growth and development.

  • Most Americans dont worry about too little fat
in their diet! Most of us eat between 6-8 times
too much fat each day! If you eat too much fat,
    there can be serious problems!
  • Obesity is the condition of having more body fat
    than is healthy.
  • High levels of cholesterol can build up in blood
vessels and lead to heart attacks and strokes.

8
There are two main types of fat that we eat.
Saturated Fats
Unsaturated Fats
butter, cheese, chocolate, eggs, shortening, ice
cream, red meat, whole milk
canola oil, fish, nuts, olive oil, peanut oil
Saturated fats are considered BAD fats. They can
increase the levels of cholesterol in blood.
Which are good fats?

Fatty foods
What foods should you choose?
How about choosing grilled, baked, or steamed
foods instead of fried?
How about drinking low-fat milk?
