Energy
4
What is energy?
Learning Target I will be able to define what
energy is.
5
It makes changes
and does work for us.
6
Energy is measured
in joules.
J
Learning target I can state the unit to measure
energy.
7
After James
Prescott Joule.
8
What is work?
Learning target I can give the correct
definition of work.
9
Work is..
When a force causes an
object to move in the
direction
of the force.

12
Work is measured
in Joules
13
So for example....
What work would a horse do
if it used 1000N over 100m?
14
100,000 J Or 100kj
Learning Target I can solve work

15
Joke..
Did you hear about
the criminal who never
had to do any work????
16
He was a joule thief.
17
Watt is power?
Learning target I can correctly define the term
power.
18
Power is the rate
at which work
is done.
19
Power is measured
in Watt?
Learning target I can state the unit used to
measure power.

Machines
Learning target I will be able to explain how
machines make work
easier.
23
A machine is a device
that makes work easier.
24
Machines change the size
Or
the direction of the force.
25
Work is not made less.

can never be

32
Some energy gets wasted
Because of friction.
33
The less friction a
machine has the more
efficient it is.

Inclined planes
Also known as ramps!
48
You have to use
less input force.
The MA of inclined planes
The more gradual
the ramp the more
MA there is.

Wedges
They are moveable
inclined planes.
51
Wheels and axles
When you turn something
and it turns something else.
52
Wheel
Small input force.
Axle
Gives a bigger force.
Because axle travels less

56
Machine notes.
Learning target I can explain how machines
make work easier.
57
Where does it all come from?
Learning target I will be able to give examples
of common forms of energy.
58
All energy in our solar system starts with
our sun
59
Is there only 1 type of energy?
60
No!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • There are many

61
Sound LightMotion Heat
GravitationalThermal Nuclear
Electrical Chemical Stored mechanicalRadiant
62
They all fall into two categories
  • Potential
  • Kinetic

63
Kinetic is movement energy
64
Potential is stored energy
65
Potential can be changed into kinetic and kinetic
to potential.
Learning target I can give examples of common
forms of energy.
66
Law of conservation of energy
  • Energy cannot be created or destroyed only
changed from one form to the other.

Learning target I will be able to describe
energy transfers and
transformations.
67
Energy transfer is the transfer of energy from
one thing to another.
Kinetic to kinetic
68
Energy transformation/change - is when energy is
changed into another form.
Gravitational potential to Kinetic and sound
and heat.
69
Learning target I will be able to describe
energy transfers and
transformations.

Energy Resource Diagrams
76
For this assignment you will show how an energy
resource starts/started with the sun
..and ends with the production of electricity.
77
You will need to make a neat, colored drawing
with descriptions.
78
You should include all of the important s-t-e-p-s
along the way.
79
The following example cannot be used.
80
Fossil Fuels

81
Millions of years ago plants and trees used
energy from the sun to grow.
82
The plants and/or animals were buried by
sediments. Through the action of heat and
pressure over millions of
centuries, they were chemically
changed. Coal, oil, and natural gas
are the results.
83
At the power plant the coal is burned to heat
water into steam. This steam is used
to turn a turbine.
84
As the turbine turns the generator, electricity
is produced.
85
Electricity is then sent to your home for your
use!
86
You may choose from the following list of
resources
  • Wind
  • Solar Tidal
  • Wave Biomass
  • Hydroelectric-water

Learning target I will be able to LINK all
sources of energy
back to the sun.
87
Nuclear Energy
Learning target I will be able to simply
describe nuclear fission and nuclear fusion.
I will be able to
evaluate both the positive and negative impact
of nuclear energy.
To get started go to my webpage and there are
some links that may help. YOU ARE WELCOME ?
88
Nuclear Fusion
In nuclear physics, nuclear fusion is
anuclear reaction in which two or more atomic
nuclei collide at a very high speed and join to
form a new type of atomic nucleus. During this
process, matter is not conserved because some of
the matter of the fusing nuclei is converted to
photons (energy).
