Title: Solving Equations II

1
Solving Equations II
2
General rules for solving equations
  • Manipulate the equation until you have a POSITIVE
variable on one side of the equal sign.
  • Whatever you do to one side of the equal sign,
you MUST do the exact same thing to the other
    side.

3
Recognizing multiplication
  • Examples (look for no operation between a number
    and the variable)

4
To Solve
  • Determine what is being multiplied to the
    variable.
  • Example

5
Step 1
  • Get rid of the 6, so x can be by itself. What
is the opposite of times 6?
  • Example

Answer Divide by 6
6
Step 2
  • Then, what does x equal?
  • Example

7
Recognizing division
  • Examples (division can also be written in the
    form of a fraction)

8
To Solve
  • Determine what the variable is being divided
    by.
  • Example

9
Step 1
  • Get rid of the 12, so m can be by itself.
What is the opposite of 12?
  • Example

Answer times 12
10
Step 2
  • Then, what does m equal?
  • Example

11
Things to remember
  • Integer rules apply multiplying and
    dividing with negatives
  • Perform the same operation, on BOTH sides of
    the equal sign
  • Variable must be POSITIVE!
