Title: Manipulating and combining materials

1
Manipulating and combining materials
  • Lesson objective to understand that materials
can be combined and processed to create more
    useful, or desirable materials

2
Questions
  1. Can you name several products that you buy that
have been made by combining processes and
    materials?
  2. Think about the meal you may have for lunch, do
you know how the ingredients were combined?

can be combined and processed to create more

3
Paper- and boards-based products
  • Paper and board are very versatile materials and
, combined with other materials, can be found in
    many everyday products.

Best printing processes and most common for
packaging
  1. Lithography
  2. Flexography

The popular aseptic package is the Brik Pak
Tetra Pak's first product was a paper carton used
for storing and transporting milk. The first
product was a package in the shape of a
triangular pyramid
Brik- Pak is made from 70 cardboard and 24
polythene and 6 aluminium. It is heat resistant
and waterproof it is know as aseptic packaging
and is used for milk, soups, fruit juices.

Timber based products
  • Natural wood is also a very versatile, and
popular, but its use is often limited by cost.
  • Therefore manufactures can create a range of
laminates, composites and other man-made boards
  • chip board - block board - MDF - hardboard
  • plywood -

Woods
  • There are two types of wood
  • Hardwoods
  • Softwoods
  • Hard woods are deciduous, while softwoods are
    generally coniferous (often called evergreen).
The size of the tree determines the size of the
    timber. All woods are seasoned

10
Build - Task 1
  • Find out what seasoned mean?
  • What does deciduous mean?
  • What does coniferous mean?
  • Did you know?
  • That word again is this sustainable?
  • That 80 of all wood used in the UK comes from
    abroad?

Answers
  • Wood Seasoning is the process of removal of
    moisture from Timber.
  • Coniferous forests are made up mainly of
cone-bearing or coniferous trees, such as
spruces, hemlocks, pines and firs. These trees
have small needle-like leaves that stay green all
year around, shallow root systems, and soft wood.
  • Deciduous trees are many hardwood trees the list
    of which comes next

12
Sustainable woods
  • Softwoods, which grows quickly, is often managed
as a sustainable resource. There are a smaller
number of useable softwoods than useable
    hardwoods.
  • Larch Spruce Scots Pine

13
Hardwoods
  • Oaks
  • Mahogany
  • Maple
  • Chestnut
  • Rosewoods
  • Sycamore

Lesson objective - To understand the properties
and uses of timber-based materials in commercial
production
14
Facts
  • 90 of softwoods used in the UK come from Norway
    or Sweden.
  • Why is wood a good choice for a product, look at
    the images

15
Task 2 and 3
  • A designer of childrens toys would like to make
a new product from a sustainable natural wood.
Name a suitable timber, giving the reasons for
    your choice.
  • Now design a small toy from this wood.

17
Apply task 4-5
  • Timber is often referred to as a sustainable
    material. What does this mean?
  • Manufactured boards are often used in place where
there are variations in temperatures. Explain why
this is the case, giving examples

AfL key terms
  • Hardwoods are ?
  • Softwoods are?
  • Manmade boards are?
  • What is the difference between hardwoods and
    softwoods?
  • Which grow the quickest?
