2
  • This is not the first time Jesus has raised
    someone from the dead.
  • Compare Mark 535-43
  • Compare Luke 711-17

3
  • What makes the raising of Lazarus different from
    the others?
  • John 1117

4
The Historical-Cultural Context of John 11 and 12
  • The religious hierarchy of the Jews at this time
was dominated by Sadducees, who denied the
resurrection. The Raising of Lazarus represents a
testimony to the resurrection - both Christ's and
the universal resurrection, as well as Our Lord
    as victor over death.

5
  • The Sadducees rejected the oral traditions that
the Pharisees held to. The Sadducees believed
that only the five books of Moses (Genesis,
Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) were
    authoritative.

6
  • The Pharisees believed in the resurrection of
the dead, and in angels and spirits while the
    Sadducees rejected such beliefs
  • (Acts 236-10).

7
  • The Pharisees believed that they were righteous
because of their good works - and thus were
    "Phar" fair "you see?"

8
  • Sadducees didn't believe in angels or spirits or
in the resurrection, they were "Sadd ... you
    see?"

9
  • Whats the Big Deal about the Resurrection and
why do the Pharisees and the Sadducees have
    different views?
