Similarities

• Both are forms of cell division
• Both involve similar stepsprophase, metaphase,
  anaphase, telophase
• Both involve chromosome replication
• Both are followed by cytokinesis

Differences

• Meiosis reduces the number of chromosomes in the
  daughter cells by half while mitosis maintains
  the same number of chromosomes
• Meiosis creates daughter cells that are unique
  while mitosis creates daughter cells that are
  genetically identical

• Meiosis results in 4 cells while mitosis results
  in only 2 cells
• Meiosis occurs in the reproductive organs to
  produce sex cells while mitosis occurs in the
  other body organs to produce somatic cells

• Variation is defined as the differences between
  members of a population
• Occurs during meiosis by the random separation of
  homologous chromosomes
• Occurs during prophase I during crossing over
• Occurs during fertilization by the random
  combination of haploid gametes
