Title: Key Concept: The periodic table is a map of the elements

1
16.3
  • Key Concept The periodic table is a map of the
    elements

2
I. The periodic table has distinct regions
  • Three main regions
  • Metals
  • Nonmetals
  • Metalloids
  • Elements position indicates how reactive it is.
  • 1. reactive- how likely an element is to undergo
    a chemical change

3
II. Most elements are metals
  • Metals- one of the large classifications of
elements generally located on the left side of
    the periodic table
  • Can be shaped easily
  • Solid at room temperature (except Hg)
  • Reactive Metals
  • Groups 1 2

4
  • C. Transition Metals
  • 1. Groups 3-12
  • 2. Earliest known elements
  • 3. Less reactive
  • D. Rare Earth Elements
  • 1. Top row of the 2 rows of metals shown outside
the main body of the table

5
III. Nonmetals and metalloids have a wide range
of properties.
  1. Nonmetals- elements to the right side of the
periodic table properties are opposite of those
    of metals.
  2. Properties tend to vary more from element to
    element.
  3. Many are gas at room temperature, with one
    (Bromine) a liquid.

6
  • D. Halogens- forming salts
  • Very reactive non-metals that easily form
compounds called salts with many metals
  • E. Noble Gases
  • Group 18 elements
  • Inert gases
  • Almost never react with other elements
