Did you know?
  • The U.S. Department of Education sponsors many
grant programs, including the Teaching America
History Grant, which funds services increasing
teacher knowledge and resources for teaching
history to students (Federal Grants for Public
    History Education, 2011).
  • The federal Institute of Museum and Library
Services (IMLS) also sponsors grant programs that
provide funding to libraries that want to expand
    upon their current history-related educational
resources (Federal Grants for Public History
    Education, 2011).
  • U.S. Department of Education grant programs may
award funds in excess of 800,000 to be used
across an entire public school district.
Guidelines for how much money a grant program
will award should be easily found with other
information pertaining to the grant, either
through the official website for the federal
department supporting the program or in the
    grant's informational entry on Grants.gov
(Federal Grants for Public History Education,
    2011).
  • Update Obama's Stimulus Funding Many deadlines
ended in 2010, but there are still opportunities
available. According to Recovery.gov as of June
30, 2011, over 61 billion remains to be awarded
for Contracts, Grants and Loans.(Win Government
    Grants., 2011)

Introduction
  • Teachers are always looking for new and
innovative ways to meet the needs of their
students. Each year, the student population is
becoming more and more diverse. This diversity
brings with it a challenge for teachers to find
ways to make their instruction more meaningful to
their students. This presentation will discuss a
grant from the Verizon Foundation which requests
funds for new instructional resources for the
    classrooms at Granard Middle School.

5
Why Use A Grant?
  • Educational institutions are facing a budget
    shortage.
  • Grants enable schools to acquire funds for
resources that otherwise might not be afforded.
  • Additional funding for educational resources
    increase the likelihood of promotion/graduation.
  • Activities are allowed to be continued (i.e.
    band, art, chorus, drama, etc.).

6

Grant Application2 of 2
  • The following summarizes the grant that was
applied for using the Grant Center
  • The grant application requested funds to promote
literacy in the classroom. The applicant
    suggested that increased technology for
    instruction, training for teachers, and
assistance for students would increase the
academic success of the children attending
    Granard Middle School.
  • The technology requested was additional
accessories to allow students to engage in more
    interactive instruction (Promethean Boards, CPS
    Units, etc.).
  • Training for teachers is required in order to
ensure that they have the foundation to use the
    technology appropriately in their instruction.
  • Student assistance that was requested included
funding for an afterschool homework club,
    individualized computer instruction through the
purchase of specialized software programs, and
    additional computers for the school.

Conclusion
  • The Verizon Foundation provided a complete suite
of online resources via the Grant Center to apply

  • A complete Grant Application was completed and
submitted to the Verizon Foundation to review and
    approve.
  • We received an e-mail notifying us that the
    application has been received.
  • We will be contacted by the Community Affairs
    manager handling our grant request.
  • A final decision may or may not be made at this
    time. Additional follow-up, assessment or
    evaluation may be required.
