Lets use an example equation

• What is the density of an object if its mass is
  10 grams and its volume is 5 cubic centimeters?
• What should we do to solve this?
• WHEN SOLVING EQUATIONS IN EARTH SCIENCE, THERE
  ARE 3 STEPS THAT YOU MUST FOLLOW!!
• Lets try it!

STEP 1! Write the equation!

• EXAMPLE What is the density of an object if its
  mass is 10 grams (g) and its volume is 5 cubic
  centimeters (cc)?

• In this case, we need the DENSITY formula
• Find the equation on the 1st page of your ESRT
• Density mass/volume
• D m/v

STEP 2 Substitute in your numbers!!

• EXAMPLE What is the density of an object if its
  mass is 10 grams and its volume is 5 cc?

• Now we plug in numbers from the equation
• D m/v (from step1)
• D 10g/5cc
• Whew! OK, ready for the last step?

STEP 3 Solve the Equation!

• EXAMPLE What is the density of an object if its
  mass is 10g and its volume is 5cc?

• NO NAKED NUMBERS!! Always include units.
• Also, circle your final answer
• D m/v (from step1)
• D 10g/5cc (from Step 2)
• Whats 10g/5cc
• You got it 2, but 2 what?
• Yes, 2 g/cc
