- I'm counting on being ahead of the curve.
According to the latest data the number of
immigrants in NC from the subcontinent has
tripled over the last 8-10 years to roughly
28,000. If the System Office is ever involved in
a cultural or professional exchange with India,
keep me in mind, okay? - System Office employee
8As far as
- We must take people where they are and carry
them as far as they can go within the assigned
functions of the system. - Dr. Dallas Herring

12- Give me your tired, your poor,
- Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
- The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
- Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
- I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
- Emma Lazarus The New Colossus
13- In the past four years, more than half the new
students in North Carolinas public schools were
Hispanic/Latino. - Most Hispanic/Latino children in North Carolina
live in households earning less than 30,000 per
year, where parents dont own their homes and
dont have a college education.
Data from NC Tomorrow
14Progress and Challenge
- Numbered Memo CC07-275 New Guidance on the
Admission of Undocumented Individuals - notwithstanding any policy of the local board,
colleges should immediately begin admitting
undocumented individuals. - In curriculum, out-of-state tuition required
except when waived by law (Learn and Earn, for
example)
15- Help schools and colleges prepare students to
succeed in an interconnected world in which the
rules have changed for everyone.
16Modeling ExcellenceEast-West Community College
Partnership
- After recruiting trip to Asia, Thailands Prime
Minister asked for help in establishing
community college system. - November 2001 Thai Government created 10
community colleges in rural areas having no
access to higher education 4000 students in
first 18 months now up to 19 colleges and more
than 35,000 students - Thai delegations have visited and teams from NC
have traveled multiple times.

something to a community that has already given
me so much. I want to leave you with one last
comment, be grateful for all you have in this
country, the freedom, the sunshine, the people
and most of all the opportunities. You gave me
the chance to start over, to reinvent myself and
to accomplish a lifelong dream. - Marti Curtis, Beaufort County Community
