2
Days and Night
  • The celestial body around which Earth rotates and
    revolves is the SUN
  • The time required for Earth to rotate once on its
    axis is called a day.
  • Earths rotation is a direct cause of daylight
    and night.

3
Seasons
  • Seasons are caused mainly by the 23.5 degree tilt
    of Earths axis.
  • December 22 marks the beginning of winter in the
    Northern Hemisphere.
  • Winter in the Southern hemisphere is caused by
the South Pole tilting away from the sun.

Phases of the Moon
  • Phases are the different appearances of the moon
    due to its changing position.
  • Caused by the relative positions of the moon,
    Earth, and the sun.
  • When the sunlight part of the moon we see from
Earth appears to get larger it is called waxing.
  • When the sunlight part of the moon we see from
Earth appears to get smaller it is waning.

6
Eclipses
  • Eclipses are when the shadow of one celestial
    body falls on another.
  • Doesn't happen every month because the moons
    orbit is tilted.

7
Solar Eclipses
  • During a total solar eclipse the moon appears to
fully cover the disk of the sun.
  • Happens when the moon is between the Earth and
    the sun.

Tides
  • The force that pulls tides is gravity.
  • The main source of gravity for tides is the moon.
  • High tide is the bulge that takes place on parts
of the Earth facing or opposite the moon.

11
Neap Tide
  • When the Earth, moon, and sun form a ninety
    degree angle.

12
Spring Tide
  • When the Earth, moon, and sun form a straight
    line.
