  • Compared with other Western European countries

proportion of land devoted to agricultural

  • A large part of Spain is semiarid, with
temperatures that range from extremely cold in
the winter to scorching in the summer. Rainfall
is often inadequate and summer droughts occur
    frequently.

  • However, the soil is generally of poor quality,
and only about 10 of the land is considered
    excellent.
  • In addition, the roughness of the terrain has
been an obstacle to agricultural mechanization
    and to other technological improvements.
