• Dutch colonists bought this area from Native
  Americans(Indians) and called it New Amsterdam.
• British arrived and took possession of it. They
  changed the name and called the city New York.
• The city is divided into 5 boroughs Bronx,
  Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island.

ELLIS ISLAND AND THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

• In the past 12 million immigrants arrived in New
  York by ship. The ships stopped at the
  immigration centre on Ellis Island where the
  immigrants were checked. This island is now a
  museum and a
• popular place
• reminding
• New Yorkers their
• origins.

• saw was the Statue of Liberty,
• which stands in New York
• Harbour. For this reason it
• became a symbol of freedom
• and opportunity.
• The Statue of Liberty was made
• in France and transported to
• the USA in 1885.
