Title: Instruments and their families 7th Grade Music Appreciation

1
Instruments and their families7th Grade Music
Appreciation
  • Kristin Sundman

2
Introduction
  • Naming the four families
  • Identifying each instrument
  • Grouping the instruments into different ensembles

3
Woodwinds
  • Flute
  • Clarinet
  • Oboe
  • Saxophone
  • Bassoon

4
Wooden Instruments
  • The title woodwind, comes from the fact that many
of the instruments in this family are made of
wood. Such instruments as the oboe, clarinet,
    and bassoon.
  • The flute was once made out of a wooden cylinder,
but they have now switched over to a metal base.
The flute is still in the woodwind family.

5
Brass Instruments
  • The title fits this family well, they are all
made out of the metal brass and each has a
distinct sound. The trumpet and french horn have
the highest pitched voices in the brass family
where the tuba is the lowest pitched voice.
  • These are the names of the instruments in the
    brass family
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • French horn
  • Euphonium
  • Tuba

6
Conical versus Cylindrical
  • Conical brass instruments are those in which the
size of the tubing from the mouthpiece to the
bell gradually increases in diameter. Such
instruments are the french horn, euphonium, and
    tuba.
  • Cylindrical brass instruments keep the same
diameter of tubing all the way to the bell.
These instruments include the trumpet and
    trombone.

7
Percussion
  • There are numerous instruments in this family.
We will take a look at some of the major and most
    often used instruments.
  • Snare drum
  • Cymbal
  • Bass drum
  • Xylophone
  • Tambourine
  • Steel drums
  • Congas

8
Two Types of Percussion
  • There are Pitched percussion instruments which
consist of the Vibraphone, xylophone, steel
drums, and timpani. They are called pitched
instruments because they can play numerous notes
    on one instrument
  • The un-pitched instruments are basically all the
drums such as, the snare drum, bass drum,
cymbals, tambourine, and congas. Each of these
instruments just have one pitch. There are
different sounds with different sized drums
(snare drum to bass drum) but they can only play
    one note at a time

9
Strings
  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Cello
  • String Bass

10
Orchestra
  • As one can see in this picture of the Cleveland
Orchestra, there are many different instruments.
Every String instrument is involved. The string
basses are in the very back of the picture and
the violins, violas, and cellos are in the front.
Also there are woodwinds, brass, and percussion
    instruments in an orchestra.

11
Band
  • In a band setting, there are all the woodwind,
    brass, and selected percussion instruments.
There are no string instruments in a band
    ensemble.

Smaller Ensembles
  • As we have seen, there are basically two
different ways to combine the majority of the
instrument families to make a large ensemble.
  • There are also other combinations that can create
smaller ensembles. Some of these small groups
include, woodwind quintet and brass quintet
  • Other groups can be duets and trios with the same
instruments or with different instruments and
    families.

13
Woodwind Quintet
  • This is the Solaris Quintet where each member is
one of the woodwind faculty of the University of
    Akron.
  • The instruments involved in a woodwind quintet
are flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and french
    horn

14
Brass Quintet
  • This is the American Brass Quintet, which has
    been around since 1960.
  • The instruments involved are two trumpets, a
    french horn, trombone and tuba.

15
String Quartet
  • This is the Mallette String Quartet out of
    California.
  • The instruments involved in a string quartet are
two violins, a viola, and a cello.
