    habits/ethics (e.g., individual/team
    responsibilities, willingness to learn,
    integrity, respect, confidentiality,
    self-discipline, problem-solving, punctuality,
    communication skills) and explain their
    importance in the workplace.

  • Students will describe team skills (e.g., setting
    goals, listening, following directions,
    questioning, communicating, problem-solving,
    dividing work, conflict resolution, mediation)
    and evaluate the role of team skills in todays
    workplace.

  • Assign each group one of the 5 important human
    relations skills and have them develop a scenario
    in which the manager would need to use this skill
    to be more effective.

Self-Understanding
  • An awareness of your attitudes and opinions, your
    leadership style, your decision making style, and
    your relationships with other people.

Understanding Others
  • A manager cannot treat everyone the same way
    because not everyone is the same.
  • Some want a great deal of support from their
    manager and others do not.
  • Some want to be involved in the decision making
    process while others prefer not to.
  • Some employees work harder when praised, while
    others just want to know when they need
    improvement.
  • Managers need to know what works best for each
    employee.

Communication
  • Managers must understand what information needs
    to be communicated and how to communicate the
    information.
  • Good listeners
  • be able to listen to employee concerns to
    identify potential problems
  • determine needs respond to them more effectively.
  • Language is also very important- managers must
    communicate in language that employees can
    understand.

Team building
  • People need to feel like they are a part of a
    team, that they are important, and that they can
    count on other team members for help.

    to help them maintain a high level of job
    satisfaction.

Group Activity
  • Each group is to develop a scenario based on the
    assigned human relation skill discussed in class.
    At the end of class we will share and discuss
    each scenario.
  • For example, if communication was the assigned
    skill, a group could come up with a scenario in
    which it would be important for the manager to
    effectively communicate a problem or concern with
    employees.
