Title: Marriage Rights

1
Marriage Rights
  • Should same-sex marriage be illegal?

2
The Right to Marriage and Family
  • Men and women of full age, without any
limitation due to race, nationality or religion,
have the right to marry and to found a family.
They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage,
during marriage and at its dissolution.
  • Marriage shall be entered into only with the
free and full consent of the intending spouses.
  • -Universal Declaration of Human Rights

3
Who does this Effect?
  • This human right issue effects those who wish to
be married to the same sex, but can not because
    of marriage laws.
  • This is an issue because it is denying the right
of freedom of conscience and religion from our
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. (Section
    2a)

4
How this issue has evolved
  • In 1970 two men named Richard Baker and James
McConnell applied to get married in Minnesota but
were repeatedly denied their right to get
    married.
  • Since then the first state to legally allow
same-sex marriage in the United States was
    Massachusetts. This was in 2004.
  • It took about 34 years for one state in the US to
    legalize same sex marriage.

Organizations
  • GLAAD - Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation
  • Founded in 1975 in the United States by Vito
    Russo
  • Their Motto
  • To promote understanding, increase acceptance,
    and advance equality.
  • GLAAD promotes positive portrayals of LGBT
people in media by encouraging journalists,
writers and other creators to use its preferred
terminology, and to portray the LGBT community in
what it sees as an unbiased and inclusive way.

6
GLAAD in the Media
  • The GLAAD Media Awards were established in 1989
to "recognize and honor media for their fair,
accurate and inclusive representations of the
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community
and the issues that affect their lives.

7
NoH8 Campaign
  • The NOH8 Campaign is a photographic silent
protest in direct response to the passage of
Proposition 8. (Proposition 8 was passed in
California, amending the state Constitution to
ban same-sex marriage in November 2008)
  • Photos feature people with duct tape over their
mouths, symbolizing their voices being silenced
by Prop 8 and similar legislation around the
world, with "NOH8" painted on one cheek in
    protest.
  • Many Celebrities have supported this campaign

What can we do?
  • On a personal level
  • We can stand out against bullying so people feel
    safe about who they are.
  • On a local level
  • We can be aware and have groups and organizations
    that support gay rights.
  • On a global level
  • Vote and support for those who support marriage
    equality.

12
Personal Reflection
  • My opinion on this human right issue
  • I think that denying someone their right to get
married because of their personality or what they
believe is ethically and morally wrong.
  • To tell someone they cant have something because
of their sexual orientation is a human rights
issue, which can relate to racial issues and
    gender inequality.
