Promoting Health Careers in Mississippi A
division of Mississippi Hospital Association
2
Position Responsibilities
  • Radiological technologists use x-ray equipment
for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases or
injuries. They use this equipment to produce
images of internal body organs and bones. They
are responsible for evaluating the patients
condition, explaining the x-ray procedures, and
adjusting the radiographic equipment to give the
most comprehensive view of the area to be
    x-rayed.
  • Radiological technologists determine the proper
equipment settings and exposure used for each
patient. In some procedures, they are required
to mix and administer chemical mixtures so body
organs will be visible. They assist the
    radiologist and surgeon in performing
sophisticated or invasive procedures when imaging
    equipment is needed. Radiological technologists
are also responsible for the maintenance of the
    radiographic equipment.

3
Work Environment
Radiological technologists work in hospitals,
medical clinics, medical laboratories, nursing
homes, colleges and universities, governmental
facilities, mobile radiological facilities,
physician offices, urgent care centers, public
health departments, and specialized imaging
centers.
4
High School Preparation
Students interested in a career as a radiological
technologist should take courses in algebra,
biology, chemistry, computer skills, English,
emergency medical technology, physics, health
occupations/medical professions education, and
geometry.
5

Career Outlook
  • Total employment of radiological technologist is
expected to grow by 25 - 35 over the next 10
years. This professions growth is due in part
to the aging population and an increase in demand
    for diagnostic imaging.
  • Some employers are commonly reporting shortages
of radiological technologists. The demand for
radiological technologists will continue to grow
as new imaging technology develops and as
physicians look for more non-invasive diagnostic
    methods.
