Metamorphic Rocks
2
Metamorphic Rock
  • Rock that has been changed (metamorphosed) into a
different rock type, without actually melting, by
an increase in temperature and/or pressure,
and/or the action of chemical fluids.

3
How does the temperature increase?
  • The temperature increases either from being
buried deeper into the earth or if the
    surrounding rock is heated.
  • Rocks can get moved along faults.
  • Faults A fracture or fracture zone of rock,
along which rock masses have moved relative to
one another parallel to the fracture.

4
Deformation in Metamorphism
  • Regional Metamorphism a general term for
    metamorphism affecting an extensive region.
  • Rock can become extremely deformed during
metamorphism. When plates collide, it can cause
extreme change in the rock around the boundary,
    thus the changes.

5
The original rock
  • Protolith the original rock that metamorphic
rocks are formed from. Either the igneous rock
or sedimentary rock that it used to be.
