  • Changes in Rural (Farming) Population
  • Devastated by Plague and needed to become more
    efficient
  • About 1700 Great Britain began to study farming
    as a science
  • Rotated Crops (invented by Charles Townshend)
  • Mixed different types of soil, grew different
    types of crops
  • Made it easier to produce food (and COTTON)
  • More food was available for the masses
  • Population almost doubled between 1700-1800
  • This increased the demand for textiles (woven or
    knitted cloth used to make clothing, blankets,
    and other goods)
  • More efficient ways to produce textiles came
    about and soon textile factories opened up.
  • By the 1780s, England and Scotland had over 120
    textile factories
  • Their success led merchants of other products to
    develop new machines and create factories to
    increase their profits
