  abolish, or end, slavery.
• The American Colonization Society,
• freed slaves who were sent to
• Liberia in West Africa.
• Had two weaknesses
• a. Did not stop the growth or spread
• of slavery
• b. Most African Americans did NOT
• want to return to Africa, they just
• wanted to be free.

  for reformers.
• Sisters Sarah and Angelina Grimké lectured and
  wrote against slavery.
• William Lloyd Garrison founded The Liberator.
• Frederick Douglass was the best-known African
  American abolitionist.
• a. Sojourner Truth Belle escaped
• slavery in 1826.

  the North was called the Underground Railroad.
• Harriet Tubman became the most famous conductor
  on the Underground Railroad.
• Only a small number of Northerners were
  abolitionists.
• a. Eliza Lovejoy was killed by angry
• whites at his newspaper office
