The life of Samuel de Champlain
  • Born in Brouage, France around 1567
  • Died from a stroke in 1635 on Christmas
  • He was a French explorer
  • He was in the army and became a quartermaster of
    cavalry

Why?
  • On his first expedition, Champlain went to make
    an accurate map of Hudson Bay to the Great Lakes
    in 1603
  • In 1604, Champlain sailed to North America again,
    he was looking for a place where the French could
    have a permanent settlement. He remained there
    for three years

  • On his third trip in 1608, Champlain founded the
    city of Quebec along the St. Lawrence River
  • Quebec is one of the oldest cities in Canada

War, what is it good for?
  • Champlain first meet the Algonquin Indians along
    the St. Lawrence River on his first expedition
    and they became allies and traded
  • When Champlain returned, the Algonquians were
    preparing for battle against the Iroquois,
    Champlain decided to help

  • That was the first time the Iroquois had ever
    seen gunpowder
  • It is said that once Champlain shot his gun, he
    killed two Iroquois leaders and the others were
    so scared they fled

  • He was a protestant which was uncommon in France

  • He also tried to spread Christianity to Native
    Americans
  • In 1629, Quebec was captured by England and
    Champlain was taken prisoner
  • In 1633, Canada was returned to France and
    Champlain spent the rest of his life in Quebec
