Title: EMPIRICAL RESEARCH ARTICLES:

1
EMPIRICAL RESEARCH ARTICLES
  • A Brief Overview

2
EMPIRICAL RESEARCH ARTICLES
  • Empirical
  • Originating in or based on observation or
experience. Relying on experience or observation
alone often without due regard to system and
theory. Capable of being verified or disproved
    by observation or experiment.
  • Merriam-Websters Collegiate Dictionary (11th
    ed.). (2003). Springfield, MA Merriam-Webster,
    Incorporated.

3
EMPIRICAL RESEARCH ARTICLES
  • General Characteristics of Empirical Research
    Articles
  • Report on research that has been conducted by the
authors themselves rather than only summarizing
    the work of other scholars
  • Found in scholarly, peer-reviewed journals
  • Usually have abstracts
  • Usually have substantial reference lists
  • Usually longer than 10 pages

4
EMPIRICAL RESEARCH ARTICLES
  • General Characteristics, Continued
  • Often have charts displaying the data collected
  • Usually have the following types of sections
  • Introduction/Background
  • Method(s) (of data collection)
  • Results
  • Discussion
  • Conclusion

5
EMPIRICAL RESEARCH ARTICLES
  • Different methods of data collection are used to
conduct the research/studies that are described
    in empirical research articles.
  • We will be covering the following methods
  • Qualitative
  • Quantitative

6
EMPIRICAL RESEARCH ARTICLES
  • Qualitative Research
  • Explores attitudes, behaviour and experiences
through such methods as interviews or focus
groups. It attempts to get an in-depth opinion
from participants. As it is attitudes, behaviour
and experiences which are important, fewer people
take part in the research, but the contact with
these people tends to last a lot longer. Under
the umbrella of qualitative research there are
    many different methodologies (e.g. action
    research, ethnography, grounded theory).

7
EMPIRICAL RESEARCH ARTICLES
  • Quantitative Research
  • Generates statistics through the use of
large-scale survey research, using methods such
as questionnaires or structured interviews. If a
market researcher has stopped you on the streets,
or you have filled in a questionnaire which has
arrived through the post, this falls under the
umbrella of quantitative research. This type of
research reaches many more people, but the
contact with those people is much quicker than it
    is in qualitative research.

    user-friendly guide to mastering research
techniques and projects. Oxford How To Books.

EMPIRICAL RESEARCH ARTICLES
  • NOTE
  • Some research/studies may use just one method of
collecting data some may use both methods

9
EMPIRICAL RESEARCH ARTICLES
  • Following are four examples of articles
  • One using primarily qualitative data collection
  • One using primarily quantitative data collection
  • One that is a scholarly article primarily
summarizing the research of other authors
  • One that is a trade journal article
  • Can you identify which one is which?
