• They explored, and found things they wanted
• Land
• Wealth (silver, gold) and trade opportunities
• People to convert to Christianity

• Chance to become famous
• Ability to make their country more powerful
• Small countries, so they wanted more power than
  neighboring country

  Based on new exploration and opportunities

• 1800s (19th century) result of industrial
  revolution. Can produce more stuff quicker, so
  need
• Cheap labor (workers)
• Cheap raw materials (stuff to make stuff out of)
• Markets places to sell all the stuff they
  produce

• Forced natives to work
• Took resources from the lands they conquered
• Ex coal, wood, diamonds, gold, iron, cotton
• Markets Europeans took raw natural resources
  from places in empire, made stuff out of it, then
  sold it back to them

• Dividing up the world between a few countries
  leads to a lot of competition
• Think that might lead to a nasty fight???

  Write a letter to the king (of Spain, Portugal,
  England, or France) explaining why your country
  should not be ruled by a European country.
  Include reasons why them ruling over you is wrong
  (bad). Also include good things that would
  result from your independence.
