Bio-available ingredients means delivering

where they are meant to act! The key to
effective cosmeceuticals is good bioavailability

Chirality
The topic of chirality is concerned with
getting the most from your actives and limiting
unnecessary irritation. A chiral molecule has a
mirror-image form, a left and a right. The
phenomenon of chirality (probably from the Greek
word for hand) is very important in the field of
serious cosmeceutical product formulation. Amino
acids, for example, can be either right- or
left-handed mirror-images of each
other. However, they are always left handed
when produced by living organisms. This is
important because chirality can affect how a
molecule takes part in the chemical reactions
crucial for life.

Chirality

• There are two reasons why correct chirality is
  important
• Firstly, if the ingredient is irritating, for
  example with Lactic Acid, there is little point
  adding double percentage of the mixed DL
  ingredient to achieve the same result as half the
  correct L isomer
• Secondly, it is remarkably common that the wrong
  isomer can actually damage the body rather than
  simply be inactive

Medik8 understands chirality and always use the
correct form of an ingredient wherever
possible. Chirally correct purification makes
the cost of the active ten times greater or
more. When Medik8 uses an ingredient, the
chirally correct form is always used where
appropriate to ensure maximum efficacy and
minimum irritation.

Chemical Penetration Enhancement

• For deeper penetration of Cosmeceutical active
  ingredients a chemical delivery system is often
  used to carry ingredients into the skin. eg.
  PP2
• Medik8 also uses premium refined light oils as
  carriers for many of its actives

Natural liposome technology
For emulsions or water-based medium to carry the
active ingredients, Liposome technology has been
applied to enhance the penetration of the active
ingredients in many Medik8 formulae. We only use
natural Lethicin for our Liposomal material.

Time release delivery system

• Working with technology partners, Medik8 has
  developed a unique encapsulated film fluid
  polymer for retinol products.
• By encapsulating reactive molecules such as
  all-trans-retinol, this technology has the double
  effect of both enhancing stability/ freshness but
  also in more slowly releasing the retinol
  molecules from the formula to the skin.

Time release delivery system

• Proven in Franz cell diffusion experiments,
  Medik8s time-release delivery system can prevent
  the usually highly irritation caused to skin from
  therapeutic doses of retinol by maintaining a
  slow but continuous delivery of the active
  ingredient, and avoiding the spike and trough of
  molecule delivery in regular retinol products
• Low irritation means high compliance

Enhanced stability
Medik8 have pioneered new techniques to stabilise
vitamin C and kojic acid to offer breakthrough
antioxidant and whitening products. These
inventions are patent protected and the benefits
are unique to Medik8 clients.

pH balanced
All aqueous Medik8 products are pH balanced
to ensure that the skins delicate equilibrium is
not compromised Most products operate at the
skins natural slightly acidic pH of 5.5
Vitamin C based products have a lower pH 3.0 to
enhance penetration of this aqueous molecule
Certain exfoliating products containing fruit
acids are purposefully formulated to lower pHs
to encourage the sloughing off of dead cells
Conversely, for eye cleansing products, the pH is
raised to 7.7 which is the same as tears

Airless Packaging

• We use airless packaging, where appropriate, to
  ensure that the integrity of the product is not
  compromised while on the shelf or in the supply
  chain
• For certain cream and aqueous formulations it is
  important to keep certain active ingredients away
  from oxygen in the air, as this would lead to
  product degradation
• Two types of airless packaging system (One-way
  piston pack / Airtight inner-pouch setup)

Soap-free

• To ensure that the delicate skin balance is not
  disrupted
• No harsh detergent soap alternatives which can
  damage the lipid barrier of the skin causing
  irritation and dryness
• We do not use
• Soaps (even retained glycerin varieties)
• SLES (Sodium Lauryl Ethoxylated Sulphate)
• SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate)
• Other Sulphates (ie. No ALES etc.)

• Medik8 cleansers are produced according to the
  principles green-chemistry (use of green
  manufacturing techniques ie. no ethoxylation)
• Medik8 cleansers are therefore purposely mild
  however they are still very effective at removing
  excess oils, grease and make-up and still have a
  creamy foam feeling
