Tips On Giving Good Talks Debate(pp111-113)
  • 1. Consciously or unconsciously, we are
involved in dozens of debates every day. These
can range from informal discussion with friends
or with yourself about the advantages and
disadvantages of taking a particular action to
formal discussions in business meetings or in
    class about issues concerned.
  • 2. Regardless of the situation, we are
evaluating the merits of one proposition against
the other. The weighing of the evidence,
advantages, and appeals of one side of an
argument or situation against the other is the
    basis of the debate.
  • 3. While debating, only the first speaker can
have a prepared speech, all the others must adapt
their presentation to the requirements of the
debates as it progresses.Hence, a persons
speaking skills can receive an exciting test in
    debate of any kind.
  • 4. Aristotle said there are three ways of
arguing in the first you hope that people will
believe you because they trust you in the second
you try to persuade the other person that you are
right by being reasonable and by referring to
facts and in the third you try to persuade the
other person by the strength of your belief and
    by changing their feelings.

Debating topic I Should the driver open the
door, or keep it closed?
  • Background As the bus approached a bus station,
a girl cried out My mobile phone has been
stolen by somebody on the bus. Please do not open
the door until the police come. Some other
passengers opposed Ive got very urgent things
to do. Open the door, let me get off. Who should
    the driver listen to?
  • Side A 1) We should show sympathy to the girl
    since she is the victim.
  • 2) The thief should not be spared.
  • 3) Its everyones duty to protect
    the good social order.
  • Side B 1) The girl should think out a better
way to solve the problem than to keep so many
people wasting time because of her, since in
    this modern world
    time is money.
  • 2) The over-majoritys opinions
    should be counted..
  • 3) The driver should listen to
neither of the girl or the passenger but call
the police and obey their orders.
  • Judge It may be debatable whether the door
should be open or remain shut. Yet one thing can
never be over-emphasized people should show more
concern to each other. People should try to stand
in each others shoes and have a better
understanding of each others position so that
they unite to better combat thieves and other bad
    things in the society.

Another real story the teacher would like to
relate Hey, mind your mobile phone, my
lady. There are frequent mobile thefts these days
and most victims are people who doze off leaving
the phone by their side. The girl was cautioned
by a librarian when she was about to doze off at
the library. She thanked her sincerely.
  • The teachers
    comments
  • The idea of living in an atomized society is
gaining popularity in China now. Some people
believe in good fences make good neighbors.
What people once shared , they now claim to
divide. What people once gossiped about, they now
pass over in silence. What people were once
willing to offer, they now keep. What people were
once enthusiastic to help with, they now refrain
    from.
  • The notion of an atomistic society,
glorified by centuries of western splendors and
imported along with other wonderful notions into
China, is largely based on the rational person
assumption, which depicts every human being as
rational enough to take both care and
responsibility for their own business. Outside
intervention is not only unnecessary but also
    unwelcome.
  • Having played a vital role in the
development of human civilization , this notion
has no current rival. However, its role should
not be exaggerated or stretched too far. Men do
not deserve mutual indifference merely because
they have progressed so much in commercial
civilization, achieved so much material wealth
and simply been rational being for a long time.
  • Kindness is the golden chain by which society is
    bound together.-- ??(Goethe)

Debating topic 2 Should the doctor keep the
patient or let her die uncared outside?
  • Background In Nanjiang County of Southwest
Chinas Sichuan Province, a non-native woman who
had fallen off a cliff was rescued by firemen and
sent to the traditional Chinese Medical Hospital
of Nanjiang County, where doctors conducted a
physical examination. After the check-up the
hospital director concluded that this woman must
be a beggar. And he gave permission for the
deputy director to take the patient out and drop
her off in a deserted place, leaving the woman to
die which she did the next morning.
  • Side A 1)Hospital medical staff are obliged to
help patients who are in need regardless of their
    occupation or economical status.
  • 2)Leaving a patient to die
unattended to is as bad as murdering him(her).
  • Side B 1)The hospital or clinic is a provider
of health heath care and patients are consumers
who ought to pay for services provided.
  • 2)Hospitals need to make
money so they can pay their employees.
  • Judge This episode may, in a way, serve as a
good example of the negative consequences of the
prevalence of money worship and the loss of moral
values. Being a doctor is not only a professional
job, but also a job of conscience and
responsibility to patients who are sick or dying.
The patients well being should always be placed
in the first place. Its rightful that the
hospital chiefs were finally arrested on the
charge of causing death by negligence.(Resource

Another real story the teacher would like to
relate A number of new-born babies have died
from being fed fake and shoddy milk powder in
Fuyang County in East Chinas Anhui Province and
in other cities.
  • The teachers comments
  • 1) Fake products, fake diplomas,plagiarism,
cheating in examinations, business and accounting
fraudnews of these crimes appears frequently in
the media, putting the subject of honesty in the
    limelight.
  • Can you cite some more examples
    regarding dishonesty in the society?
  • a) Wang Mingming, a professor at
Beijing University, was guilty of plagiarism in
an anthropological work he was preparing.
  • b) Mooncake with fillings left over
from the previous year were found related to the
    Guanshengyuan Company in Nanjing.
  • c)Four years ago, fake wine made from
industrial materials caused death and injury
affecting over 200 people in Shanxi Province.

2) The Chinese do have the tradition to emphasize
honesty.
  • Confucius placed honesty and trust as the
most important elements for a government, above
    economic and military power.
  • A word from an honorable man cannot
    be withdrawn.
  • One can easily borrow money again if
he pays back what he borrowed before.
  • Genuine goods at a fair price,
equally honest with aged and child customers.
  • 3) Lessons learned The up-and- down
story of Wenzhou shoe business. It has taken
many years for the city to get its good name
    back.
  • 4)A sound credit system is in need in
China However high the moral criterion is,
    effective supervision is necessary.
  • Its high time the Chinese considered
    the basic value of trust.

9
Do you think the doctor should inform the
patients of cancer?
  • Positive
  • Patients want to know and have the right to know.
  • 2) Its wrong to hide the truth, for in most
cases, it is not a shock for the patient but for
    his family.
  • 3) Its the patients body. The patient must have
a say in choosing alternate means of treatment.
  • Negative
  • 1) It is heartless and cruel to tell for it may
make the patient give up, cause depression, or
    even lead to suicide.
  • 2) A white lie(???????) can save undue suffering
so most relatives are for it.
  • 3) Patients are usually too sick to make a wise
    decision on his own case.

According to Rousseau Chen(weihua_chen_at_yahoo.com),
the development of the city has been achieved at
a high cost to the environment. Do you
agree?Argue with reason and evidence (Focus the
price of environmental neglect).
  • Chens points are summarized as follows
  • 1) While the forest of chimneys has vanished
from downtown Shanghai, it has moved to the
suburbs, polluting the land where our food grows.
  • 2) The pollution of rivers and lakes has
caused the problem of clean drinking water.
  • 3) Promoting family cars will result in the
environmental hazards or the impact on local
    traffic.
  • 4) Many citizens who are not so generous in
their daily lives are big-hearted when it comes
to the environment. They spoil our green spaces
with spit, nasal mucus, litter and all kinds of
    filthy garbage.
  • 5) Officials are being assessed according to
the growth of GDP and local revenue income, not
according to any efforts they might make to
    protect the environment.
  • 6) Many of the city hotels offer guests new
toothbrushes every day and change towels daily
regardless of the fact they are still clean and
    could be reused.
