Diversification - rationale
  • Vision for Expanded Services in Education and
    Training.
  • The Adelaide Western General Practice Network
(AWGPN) has provided training and support to many
health service providers over many years.
  • Since the AWGPN was incorporated in 1994 the
range of education services has expanded to the
point where the AWGPN provides training to
    general practitioners, practice staff (including
    managers, support staff, receptionists and
practice nurses), Division staff throughout South
    Australia interstate, pharmacists,
psychologists and ever expanding range of other
    allied health professionals.
  • It was time for the next step why not
    become an RTO?

3

  • The AWGPNs aim is that our Healthfirst Training
Australia Training Skills Centre will support
General Practice and the Primary Health Care
Sector by providing quality training and
contribute to a skilled workforce and
    professional Health Industry.

Diversification Outcomes Have Influenced
7
From the halcyon days of large grants to more
restricted grants we are trying to become less
dependent on Government funding in case the well
dries up! The AWGPN have anticipated forecasts of
income from our RTO which should help greatly
towards this goal of sustainability. What will
an RTO do for GPs? Well firstly it will
recognise and value the experience of existing
staff to gain a recognised qualification via
Recognition of Prior Learning Recognition of
Current Competencies and gap training.

    modes.

12
  • Our timing for the establishment of Healthfirst
    Training seemed to be excellent!
  • We could provide creative solutions for the
workforce Crisis in the Health Industry

13
  • Overcoming chronic skills shortages is the
    biggest challenge for Australian industries.
  • Minimise the impact of the skills shortage by
using a solutions checklist to help sustain your
    business with training leadership solutions.

We acknowledge the Solutions Checklist of Service
Skills SA and SA Hair Beauty Industry for
sharing their ideas
14
Training the answer to the workforce crisis
  • We need to ensure the health sector has the
workforce required to fulfill future skill needs.
  • The challenge for the future is not only an
increase in the traditional professions of
medicine/nursing and allied health but also the
realignment in the roles and functions of our
    staff.
  • The new qualifications for Medical Practice
    Assistance, Practice Management and Health
Administration and others are examples of new
roles to support the expansion of our workforce
and can assist in the delivery of healthcare with
    a co-ordinated multi-disciplinary team approach.

15
A Primary Care Workforce Solution?
  • Example of Medical Assistants
  • The new medical assistant training qualification
has been developed as an innovative solution to
the workforce pressures facing general practices
    in Australia.
  • Medical Assistants are trained to carry out
    delegated administrative and clinical assisting
duties specific to the ambulatory care
environment. Lessons learned thus far from the
    introduction of this national qualification
include the need to consult widely within the
health care profession in the development of new
roles, the imperative to bring together health
and education sector expertise, the importance of
flexible course delivery and the clearer role and
    boundaries definitions.

16
Training is a critical function within any
organisation. The success of the Health Workforce
plan is dependant on industry input. All
employers have a role to play in identifying
their future priorities and skill needs and
together we can lobby the Governments, both state
and federal, to address the current shortages
through the continued funding of training places
particularly in the Primary Health Care Sector of
the Health Industry for both existing workers and
job seekers.
17
Partnerships To achieve quality outcomes for the
workforce of the Primary Health Care Sector our
objectives are ? To establish strong
relationships and networks with a range of
stakeholders groups to assist in the growth of a
skilled workforce with the Health Industry. ? To
offer a wider range of educational health
services to the community through innovative
partnerships and collaborations.
18
