Itziar Camio was born in Bilbao, Spain, but has spent much of her life in the United States. She has also earned a certificate to teach English from Cambridge, which she put to good use when she moved back to her native country. She made the decision to set up her own language school in her village, offering her the opportunity to teach the language to those who may otherwise have never had the opportunity to learn.

Itziar Camio had a very interesting career path, starting out as a senior auditor and financial consultant at Deloitte and Touche, before becoming an English teacher in Spain. After that five-year hiatus that she took from the financial world, she returned by getting a job at a California-based business called Fearless Chocolate.

When Itziar Camio was born in Spain to a Basque father, the Basque language was not used in schools in the region. A standardized form of the Basque language introduced in the late 60’s changed the perception of Basque as an inferior language. The Bilbao, Spain of Camio has a history of accepting the linguistic, cultural and political autonomy of the Basques, and today the Basque Autonomous Community of Balbao enjoys Basque as an official language along with Spanish.
