    screen with lower cost package
  • Consumer should not be disadvantaged
  • Second Run may have lower quality standards
  • Dual level security may be feasible

  • ITU International Telecommunications Union
  • DVB Digital Video Broadcasting
  • MPEG Motion Picture Experts group
  • Others

10
EDCF
  • The EDCF is not a standards body
  • The EDCF polls user requirements and matches them
    to existing standards
  • If no appropriate Standard exists or a Standard
needs modifying the EDCF will make
    recommendations to the Standards bodies

11
Existing work
  • MPEG already covers the lower levels of
Electronic Cinema, EDCF has advised that profile
    extensions may be required
  • DVB already covers the lower levels of Electronic
Cinema. DVB may or may not wish to extend its
    work
  • SMPTE is currently working towards some new
    standards
  • The ITU is working on TV based standards which
may not be appropriate for the Highest level

12
Technology Levels
  • Level 1 Application level of digital projection
and presentation matching or exceeding the
capabilities of existing 35mm film in terms of
colour, contrast and resolution.. Used for
    digital cinema presentations.
  • Level 2 Application level of digital projection
and presentation equivalent to standardized high
    definition television (HDTV) specifications (for
    example 1920/1080/24P after visualy lossless
compression). Used for current digital cinema and
    electronic cinema presentations.
  • Level 3 Application level of digital projection
and presentation equivalent to enhanced standard
    definition (EDTV) specifications. Used for
    electronic cinema presentations.
  • Level 4 Application level of digital projection
    and presentation equivalent to standard
    definition (SDTV) specifications. Used for
    electronic cinema presentations.

13
EDCF Module Interface
  • EDCF-T Carrying out Audit of Technology
  • EDCF-C Working on level 1 and 2 Commercially
  • EDCF-T Will advise EDCF-C on best approach to
achieve level 2 in the short term, Level 1 in the
    future

14
EDCF-TTopic Groups

  • Image Compression
  • Transport and Delivery
  • Security
  • Theater systems
  • Audio
  • Projection systems
  • Server systems

15
Pending Studies
  • Projector Technology Evaluation
  • Compression System Evaluation

16
Conclusion
  • Digital Cinema can be rolled out with existing
    technology
  • The Cost will drop in the near future with a
    standardised approach and technology development
  • Care is needed to segregate applications into
    commercially viable entities.
