Standard
Advanced - 1.6 Compare and contrast the use of
form, both past and present, in a varied
repertoire of music from diverse genres, styles,
and cultures.
Objective
SSBAT identify the musical structure of a piece
in classical terms of form.
4Lesson 1
- Motivation - Students will listen to examples of
popular music and will be asked to describe the
form in simple terms, such as verse, chorus,
and refrain. Students will also note the use of
repeats and key changes. - Input of Information Introduce students to
classical form vocabulary. Vocabulary will be
defined and written on board.
- Checking Comprehension - Question and answer
session.
- Structured Practice - Students will analyze
another music example using the new form
vocabulary to be discussed in class.
- Guided Practice - Students will analyze a piano
concerto to be handed in.
- Closure Vocabulary will be reviewed and any
questions answered.
5Lesson 1 Homework
- Students will be given a score of the Star
Spangled Banner. They must identify and outline
the form, the beginnings and endings of phrases,
and note important musical events on the score. - Homework will be collected and graded.
6Lesson 2
Standard
Advanced - 1.6 Compare and contrast the use of
form, both past and present, in a varied
repertoire of music from diverse genres, styles,
and cultures.
Objective
Students will discuss the use of form and the
role of particular musical events in major works
of music by well known composers.
7Lesson 2
Motivation - Teacher will play well known
classical compositions for students and students
will be asked to identify important musical
events. Input of Information Introduce student
s to new vocabulary fugue, sonata, and concerto.
Vocabulary will be defined and written on board.
Checking Comprehension - Students will orally
compare two types of form, noting similarities
and differences. Structured Practice In groups,
students will analyze one score from the
repertoire that exemplifies concepts of form
discussed. Guided Practice Individually, stude
nts will analyze a score of Beethovens 5th
Symphony while listening to the recording.
Closure Students will hand in the completed
analysis and any last questions will be
answered.
8Lesson 2 Homework
- Students should listen to examples of main-stream
popular music that are successful and highly
rated. Students should take note of form and
possible reasons that would explain the songs
success to prepare for discussion.
9Lesson 3
Standard
Advanced - 1.6 Compare and contrast the use of
form, both past and present, in a varied
repertoire of music from diverse genres, styles,
and cultures.
Objective
SSBAT recognize form and important musical events
in more complicated aural examples. Students
should be able to critique music using musical
vocabulary.
10Lesson 3
Motivation - Students will discuss their opinions
on non-mainstream popular music describe reasons
why it is not popular. Input of Information St
udents and teacher work together to relate bad
music to flaws in form, musical expression and
unsuccessful musical events. Checking Comprehensi
on - Students will note and explain unsuccessful
musical events in given examples.
Structured Practice In groups, students will
discuss specific musical events and present their
collection of ideas to the class.
Guided Practice Students are asked to relate
key ideas discussed to critique other genres of
music and to justify how they feel.
Closure Material is reviewed and any questions
are answered.
11Lesson 3 Homework
- The students will choose a favorite song and a
song they dislike.
- Students must write a short one-two page paper
comparing the two songs in terms of form,
expression, and other important elements and
events of the music.
