  • By Alannah Berridge and Kaila Faminoff

2
Life
  • John Calvin (July 10, 1509 May 27,
  • 1564) was a French Protestant
  • Theologian during the Protestant
  • Reformation and was a central developer
  • of the system of Christian Theology
  • called Calvinism.
  • He is renowned for his teachings and
  • writings, in particular for his Institutes
  • of the Christian Religion.
  • John Calvin had been exiled from Geneva because
he, William Farel and Antoine Froment were
accused of wanting to create a "new papacy."
  • Calvin attempted to institute a number of changes
to the city's governance and religious life.

Life Continued
  • He drew up a catechism and a confession of faith,
which he insisted all citizens must affirm.
  • The city council refused to adopt Calvin's creed,
and in January 1538 denied them the power to
excommunicate, which was seen as a vital power.
  • Later on, the city council expelled them from
    the city.
  • John Calvin died in Geneva on May 27, 1564. He
was buried in the Cimitiere des Rois.

Teachings
  • Although nearly all of Calvin's adult life was
spent in Geneva (1536-38 and 1541-64), his
publications spread his ideas of aproperly
reformed church to many parts of Europe and from
there to the rest of the world.
  • Calvin's first published work was an edition of
the Roman philosopher Seneca's De Clementia.
  • His first explicitly theological work was the
Psychopannychia. He finished it in 1534 but
    didn't publish it until 1542.

Teachings Continued
  • This particular work showed his mastery of the
    Bible.
  • Calvin made commentaries on many books of the
Bible, many of which are still in print after
    over 400 years.
  • Calvin was a preterist, which is to say that he
believed most prophecies had already been
    fulfilled in history.

Calvinism
  • Calvinism is a theological system and an approach
to the Christian life that emphasizes the rule of
    God over all things.
  • Today, this term also refers to the doctrines and
practices of the Reformed Churches, of which
    Calvin was an early leader.
  • The rising importance of the Reformed churches,
and of Calvin, belongs to the second phase of the
    Protestant Reformation, when evangelical churches
began to form after Luther was excommunicated
    from the Catholic Church.

7
Calvinism Continued
  • Calvinism became the theological system of the
majority in Scotland, the Netherlands, and parts
of Germany and was influential in France,
    Hungary, Transylvania, and Poland.
  • Calvinism gained some popularity in Scandinavia,
especially Sweden, but was rejected in favor of
Lutheranism after the synod of Uppsala in 1593.

8
Five Points of Calvin
  • There are five main points within Calvinism. They
    are
  • Total Depravity Unconditional Election
    Limited Atonement Irresistible
    GracePerseverance of the Saints

9
Five Points of Calvin Continued
  • Total Depravity       Sin has affected all
    parts of man.
  • Unconditional Election     God does not base
His election on anything He sees in the
individual. He chooses the elect according to the
    kind intention of His will.
  • Limited Atonement     Jesus died only for the
elect. Though Jesus sacrifice was sufficient for
all, it was not efficacious for all.
  • Irresistible Grace     When God calls his elect
    into salvation, they cannot resist.
  •  Perseverance of the Saints      You cannot
lose your salvation. Because the Father has
elected, the Son has redeemed, and the Holy
Spirit has applied salvation, those thus saved
    are eternally secure.
