Full-Truckload Shipping or FTL
Full Truckload Shipping (FTL) is the
transportation of large amount of freight or
cargo from one place to another. Typically, FTL
shipping would have to be full generally
occupying the entire space of a semi- trailer or
intermodal container. Additionally, companies
saddled with transporting a full cargo container
to a single location for customers are referred
to as truckload carriers. In contrast, Less Truck
Load (LTL) usually entails different freight
from different customers all in one
container and they are usually transported
on many different trailers. Thus, LTL makes more
stops on transit. Coupled with the fact that
there is no definite timeline on when the freight
will arrive at its destination. On the other
hand, Full Truck Load (FTL) shipping has a
definite time of arrival without having to stop
while in transit. Usually, FTL shipping requires
the shipping company to deliver a semi trailer to
the client, who then fills the trailer with the
freight for transportation to its final
destination. Once the freight has been loaded,
the driver collects all the necessary paperwork
for the delivery. Most times, the paperwork
required are Custom papers, Bill of landing
and an invoice. On most occasions, the
driver goes straight to the consignee to
deliver the freight himself. Where conditions
do not permit, the driver wills Trans-load
the freight onto another trailer with a
different driver for onward delivery to its
destination. Hours of service regulation tends to
sometimes prolong the timeline for a Full
Truckload (FTL) delivery. Furthermore, a Full
Truckload shipper spends 47 mph while in transit.
This timeline equally takes other factors into
account such as refuelling, traffic, queues at
intersections and rest periods for the
drivers. FTL carriers will most time ship only a
particular kind of freight. This is due to the
fact that some states have laws that regulate
the different types of cargo that can be
moved in one freight. Occasionally, different
equipment and insurance may be needed to
successfully transport different kinds of cargo.
Nevertheless, some trailer drivers may still
transport different items in one cargo to ensure
that they arrive at their destination in time.
Typically, freight items can range from food,
hazardous items, and perishable items, to frozen
foods and even general appliances. In recent
years, there has been an increase in the
amount of freight transported via the
highways. Before now, a large percentage of good
were transported by train. That seems not be the
case anymore thanks to good roads and highway
expansions. Over the past few years, truckload

method of transporting goods from one state to
