Jaundice is a medical condition in which the eyes and mucous membranes become yellow. The yellow tint is generated by a high quantity of bilirubin, a bile pigment. Bilirubin is filtered from the blood by the liver and eliminated through the feces. Hyperbilirubin occurs when there is an excessive amount of bilirubin. That is the cause of the jaundice.
