Mijizas bio
  • Mijiza (Swahili for she who works with her
hands) was born in Anderson, Indiana and as a
small child consistently demonstrated an interest
and a talent in all forms of the visual arts.
  • During her high school years, Mijiza began to
take serious interest in cultivating her artistic
abilities. In 1968, her design of the crest for
the community hospital in her hometown of
Anderson, Indiana resulted in her winning her
first award. Mijiza received four years of art
training from Marian College, in Indianapolis,
Indiana. She was a professional ceramic artist at
    the internationally known Louisville Stoneware
Company in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1987 she was
solicited to create and paint murals for selected
schools in the Jefferson County, Kentucky, Public
School System. However, most importantly, Mijiza
believes her artistic inspiration and talent are
    gifts and blessings from God.
  • Mijiza has won a variety of awards for paintings
including the Boulder Colorado Art Associations
1989 First Place Award for Picking Up Pebbles,
the 1990 Honorable Mention Award for Flourishing
Essence, and the 1996 Boulder Corporate Award for
    Black into Sound.

  • Her work was the subject of a one-person show in
1996 at the National Center for Atmospheric
Research in Boulder sponsored by the National
Science Foundation. In addition, Mijiza was the
second place winner in the 1999 DaimlerChrysler
Motion Through Art competition for painting
entitled Getting to the Church on Time and a
finalist in the 2000 competition for A Passion
    for Style.
  • As a visual artist, Mijizas work depicts many
dimensions of life drawn from her ethnic
background with an emphasis on human interaction
and relationships. She believes that bright
abstract shapes and intricate lines provide a
dramatic and effective means for her expression
of both the motion of human form and the emotion
    of the human spirit.
  • Mijiza continues to pursue her art by creating
    custom artwork for private organizations,
    agencies and associates. Mijizas artistic
expressions through her paintings help to enhance
and complete the energetic lifestyle she leads as
    a wife, mother and grandmother.
