Hospice is no longer a place but, rather, a philosophy of care that offers spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, and medical support to those facing one of life’s greatest journeys. It is a compassionate approach that allows those faced with a life-threatening illness to maintain dignity and control over their lives and to spend quality time with their family and friends in the comfort of their own homes whether that is in a private residence, skilled nursing facility, or assisted living facility. The goal is not to cure, but to provide comfort and maintain the highest possible quality of life for as long as possible.

Hospice services and End of Life Care is appropriate for patients who have terminal illness and a life expectancy of six months or less. Under the physicianu2019s order, care is provided by a team of professionals led by nurses but including other professional disciplines. Service is provided in the home or other place of residence, such as assisted-living facility. Care is always patient-driven, responsive to their personal wishes and preferences. A major goal is optimal comfort and pain-control for the individual, while keeping the patient as alert and interactive as possible.
The mention alone of the term "hospice" can be sensitive. End-of-life issues can be difficult to approach for many. However, a better understanding of hospice might ease some of the pain often associated with the end of life.
