Why a Laboratory?
  • To gain and maintain a premier position in online
delivery, a technical program in IT must develop
the capacity to access labs using the Internet.
To be credible, these labs must meet standards
for conducting experiments in a rigorous way.
    Educational quality demands it.
  • Many so-called "virtual" labs are merely
simulations or animations of phenomena which do
not allow the basic steps of scientific method
  • Observation and description of a phenomenon or
    group of phenomena.
  • Formulation of an hypothesis to explain the
phenomena. In physics, the hypothesis often takes
the form of a causal mechanism or a mathematical
    relation.
  • Use of the hypothesis to predict the existence of
other phenomena, or to predict quantitatively the
    results of new observations.
  • Performance of experimental tests of the
    predictions by several independent experimenters
    and properly performed experiments.

3
Conclusion
  • For technical programsgotta have a lab!

4
Remote Access Labs
  • Four years and running
  • best practice survey of academic and corporate
  • site visits
  • Started with software tools
  • Added hardware and physical facilities
  • Migrating toward emulations

5
Criteria
  • Ease of use for faculty and students
  • Affordable
  • Scalable
  • Secure
  • Supportable
  • Non-vendor specific, but applications oriented
  • Pedagogically worthwhile

6
Remote Access Laboratory Initiatives
  • Database
  • Software Engineering
  • Network Network Security

7
Database
  • Lab manual authored by our faculty!
  • Access to Oracle educational program 8i, later 9i
for Relational db course (2001), 10g in 2004
  • 8 Courses in relational, object oriented, and
    relational/object, security and administration

8
Database Lab Infrastructure
  • Servers
  • Nova (Previously existing production server)
  • 5 dbcourse servers
  • (Isolated from production servers)
  • Software
  • Oracle 8i, 9i, now 10g
  • ERWin
  • OEM
  • Precise
  • Object Store

9
Software Engineering
  • Tools-based
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
  • Borland Together
  • IBM/Rational Enterprise Studio
  • Telelogic DOORS
  • Microsoft Project

10
Network Security Laboratory
  • Data Communications
  • Network Security
  • Intrusion Detection, Incident Response and
    Forensics

11
Issues
  • Expand online lab capability and capacity
  • Assist undergraduate programs in developing IA
lab capability--in US, Europe, and Asia
  • Scalability thru emulations

12
Next Generation
  • Emulations using OpNet IT Guru
  • Piloted Fall 2004
  • Very flexible, highly scalable, affordable
