The Theodor Aman Art Museum (Craiova,Romania) is housed in the Jean Mihail Palace, built between 1899-1907, according to the plans designed by the French architect Paul Gauttereau. This impressive building combines the French academic style with elements of Renaissance and late Baroque. The palace is lavishly furnished with Venetian mirrors and Murano crystal chandeliers; the walls are covered with Lyon silk and the stairs are made of Carrara marble. Established in 1954, the art museum includes Romanian and universal art galleries (paintings and sculptures) from the 16th-20th centuries and a famous Brâncusi Cabinet with the masterpiece The Kiss (1907). Acad. Prof. Dr. Honoris Causa Ion Irimescu (1903 – 2005) was one of Romania's greatest sculptors. His works have been exhibited around the world (Paris, Moscow, Belgrade, Budapest, Istanbul, Warsaw, Rome, Prague, Oslo, Tokyo, etc.). By commission, he painted the interior of the Opriseni Orthodox Church in his native town. In 2003, upon becoming a centenarian, he was distinguished with a remarkable celebration by the Romanian Academy and Romanian Ministry of Culture. General School No. 2 in his native city (where Mihail Sadoveanu had studied) was renamed in his honor. The Center for Study and Creation in Fălticeni also bears his name.
Dating from 1721, the famous wooden church in Surdesti, built of oak beams skillfully intertwined, displays well-preserved interior watercolor canvases and a remarkable 175-feet tall belfry. Surdesti is known to be the highest oak buildings in the world with an overall height from ground level to the top of the steeple of 235 feet. Remarkably, no metal was used to erect the belfry as even the fastenings are made entirely from wood.

The Romanian Greek Catholic Church of the Holy Archangels built in 1721, is one of the eight wooden churches from Maramures included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Traveling through Maramures: Lăschia, Răzoare, Rohia, Rogoz, Mogoşa, Deseşti-Mara On the small surface of Maramures are preserved over 100 wooden churches (8 of them listed on UNESCO list), a natural reserve also protected by UNESCO, about 60 villages and small towns, and many other attractions.

SLIDESHOW – Collection of artworks by Romanian painters. Red is a color with a distinct history. Throughout the centuries, it was favored for its appealing chromatic value and for its predominance on all colors. Red is an emotionally intense color that, according to psychologists, fuels the metabolism (Butler Greenfield 201). For millennia, wearing red clothes expressed legitimization of social status, political authority, religious rank, ancestry, and cultural identity. Since ancient times human beings have tried to find dyestuffs that could reproduce the powerful tint of blood, fire, flowers, and sunset.
They call the Wooden Churches of Maramures “the sleeping beauties” or “the sleeping princesses.” I have no clue why or who started this metaphor, but if you look at them, you have to agree: they have a royal beauty with their slim tall towers and their delicate bodies. It’s almost a wonder that they’ve resisted time and weather. Some of the Wooden Churches of Maramures are part of the UNESCO’s world heritage since 1999. No wonder: take a look at their stunning beauty, the superb craftsmanship that gives them this noble allure and behold their uniqueness.

Peleş Castle was built at the initiative of the first King of Romania, Carol I, outside the perimeter of the Podul Neagului commune, a locality with an area of 24 km in 1874, the year in which, at the initiative of the sovereign, the commune was named Sinaia. A year later, the first boyar houses were built in the center of the locality, and in 1876 the construction of the Ploieşti - Predeal railway, which also crosses Sinaia, began.
