Title: Intro to NomenclatureBinary Compounds

1
Intro to Nomenclature/Binary Compounds
2
Binary Compounds
  • Binary compound Compounds composed of two
elements (or two types of atoms)
  • Two classes of Binary compounds
  • Compounds made of a metal and a non-metals
    (Binary ionic compounds)
  • Compounds that contain two nonmetals

3
Binary Ionic Compounds
  • When a metal and non-metal combine
  • We simply name the ions!!!

4
Binary Ionic Compounds cont
  • Two types of Binary Ionic compounds
  • Type I When the metal in the compound only can
    form 1 cation
  • Type II When the metal in the compound can form
two or more cations (mostly transition metals)

5
Binary Ionic Compounds Type I
  • Rule 1. The cation is written first in the name
the anion is written second in the name.
  • Rule 2. The name of the cation is the same as the
(neutral) element from which it is derived (e.g.,
    Na "sodium").
  • Rule 3. The anion is named by adding the suffix
-ide to the root of the element name (e.g., I-
    "iodide").

6
Binary Ionic Compounds Type I cont
  • BaCl2
  • barium chloride
  • K2O
  • potassium oxide
  • Rb2O
  • Rubidium oxide

7
Binary Ionic Compounds Type II
8
Binary Ionic Compounds Type II
  • 1) Use the name of the cation then the anion
  • 2) After the name of the cation use roman
numerals to represent the charge on the cation
  • 3) The anion is named by adding the suffix -ide
to the root of the element name

9
Binary Ionic Compounds Type II
  • Cu and Cl-
  • CuCl
  • Copper (I) Chloride
  • MnO2
  • Mn (?) and O2 (2-)
  • So Mn has to have a charge of 4
  • Manganese (IV) oxide

10
Binary compounds type III
  • Type III binary compounds have only non-metals
  • They are not ionic!!! (they are another type of
bond which we will discuss in great detail
    later!!!)

11
Binary compounds type III cont
  • When we name type III binary compounds
  • The first element name is first, and the full
    element name is used
  • The second element is name as though it were an
    anion
  • Pre-fixes are used to tell how many of each atom
    is in each molecule
  • one mono Six hexa
  • two di seven hepta
  • Three tri eight octa
  • four tetra Nine nona
  • five penta ten deca
  • 4) The prefix mono- is never used for the first
element- even if there is only 1 atom present.

12
Binary compounds type III cont
  • PCl5
  • Phosphorus pentachloride
  • SiO2
  • Silicon dioxide
  • O2F2
  • Dioxygen diflouride
