Teachers Manual
  • This unit is designed to integrate Reading,
specifically Guided Reading, and Social Studies
    with a strong technology component.
  • The students are given shared reading and
    independent reading experiences supported by
    appropriate skills instruction in small
    heterogeneous groups. These experiences are
followed by independent reading and reading
extension activities. The final experience is an
    enrichment activity that is computer-based.
  • All of the materials and a book list are provided
either in the following pages or by linking to
the Balanced Literacy Workshop listing of lesson
    plans.
  • A formal assessment devise is not included.
Instead, less formal, but more accurate,
assessment can be distilled from the content and
    quality of the products produced.
  • I hope this will prove easy to use, a time-saver
and be valuable to your students.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF FAMILIESa Shared Reading
Experience
  • DIFFERENT KINDS OF FAMILIES, Nina Pelligrini
    (Kindergarten closet)
  • Instructions for reading and rereading the book
are in a flyer found in the bag with the set.
  • Adaption of the Warm Fuzzies idea
  • Materials large chenille pompoms, small googly
eyes, one blank sheet for each child, prepared
    cover for the class book
  • Introduction Think of someone in your family to
whom you would like to show your appreciation.
You may appreciate that they always have your
lunch or your lunch money ready for you. You
might appreciate that they held you when a storm
scared you. You might appreciate that they read
    a book to you.
  • Have students draw a picture of the person doing
the nice thing. Then write what you appreciate
at the bottom. If the piece gets too long to
fit, make a flip piece that can be folded up to
close the book or down to be read. Let each
child glue a Warm Fuzzy complete with eyes on
    the page.
  • Copy each page and affix a second WF to the
copy in the same spot. Have the children deliver
the sheet to the person and compile the copies,
using rings and the cover. Display in the
    library.
  • A celebration of thanks can be arranged as a
class party. Invite the recipients and make the
    presentations.
