Detection
3Enhanced Laser Diode Spectroscopy - ELDS
- ELDS is A NEW laser diode spectroscopy technique
developed by Senscient. - ELDS was developed specifically for safety
related gas detection applications in industry. - Early warning of a catastrophic EVENT
- ELDS techniques enable high reliability and
safety integrity to be achieved in adverse
operating environments
4Senscient ELDS How Does It Work?
- Laser beams traverse monitored paths
- Absorption of laser light by target gas produces
A harmonic fingerprint
unique to that gas! - The fingerprint amplitude is proportional to the
amount of gas in the laser path - ELDS can simulate gas presence for
operational verification
using SimuGas
5Senscient ELDS
- ELDS is the first laser based gas detection
technology that is both sensitive and robust. - ELDS finally enables laser based gas detection to
be used in harsh environments for
critical applications. - The techniques which make ELDS sensitive and
robust are patented.
6How Does ELDS Work?
- The laser diode drive waveforms are digitally
synthesized - A reference channel is employed for harmonic
fingerprint lock, using A retained gas sample(s). - The ELDS microprocessors actively maintain
operating conditions of the laser diode(s) to
achieve continuous harmonic fingerprint lock.
7ELDS Versus
Atmospheric Absorption
- The laser diodes in an ELDS system are operated
with conditions that generate A specific and
unique harmonic fingerprint when their radiation
is absorbed by target gas and only the target
gas.
8Senscient ELDS Optical Path
- The reference channel produces the harmonic
fingerprint by directing part of the laser beam
through the retained gas sample(s) in the
cuvette. - The ability to continuously lock on to this
fingerprint means gas specificity plus the
capability to simulate gas presence in the main
beam for operational checks using SimuGas

Sour Gas Solution
Transmitter
Wavelength B _at_ Frequency 2
Solution Gas (Sour)
Wavelength A _at_ Frequency 1
Absorption by Gas
- Methane and hydrogen sulfide are intimately mixed
in sour gas and do not separate under atmospheric
conditions. - Placement guidelines mirror methane-only
experience due to highly predominant
concentration of methane in virtually all sour
gas applications.

10SimuGas Feature
- SimuGas remote, on-command,
functional testing of
ELDS gas detectors - A small retained sample of target gas in the ELDS
transmitter is used to maintain harmonic
fingerprint lock and enable electronic synthesis
of the target gas - Because the SimuGas check is based on the signal
produced by real gas in the transmitter . . . - And uses the simple physical constants of
concentration versus signal intensity . . . - The system acts like an analyzer in a sensor
housing!
11SimuGas Benefits
- SimuGas provides ability to accomplish
on-demand, remote functionality testing from the
control room or PLC. - Detector testing can be performed remotely and
automatically without gas cells or test filters! - Standard bi-directional hart communication
provides automatic remote functional check
actuation and data logging for complete
operational confidence. - Increased safety integrity . . . can be repeated
at any desired frequency. - Significantly reduces cost of ownership!
ELDS and Simu-Gas are registered trademarks of
Senscient and are used with their permission.
