Wollheim states in Painting as an Art At
least in the context of art, intention must be
taken to include desires, beliefs, emotions,
commitments, wishes that the agent has and that,
additionally, have a causal influence on the way
he acts. Some of these psychological factors
arise from deep in the artists psyche, some are
unthinkable outside the history and traditions of
painting, but it is important to realize that
none of them could have an influence on the way
the artist works, none of them could cause him to
paint in this way rather than that, if it were
not for further very significant beliefs that he
holds. These are beliefs about how the resultant
painting will be perceived, and the artist must
believe that, when a particular intention is
fulfilled in his work, then an adequately
sensitive, adequately informed, spectator will
tend to have experiences in front of the painting
that will disclose this intention.

Every image embodies a way of seeingThe
painters way Of seeing is reconstituted by the
marks he makes on the Canvas or paper. Yet
although every image embodies a way Of seeing,
our perception or appreciation of an image
depends Also upon our way of seeing.

What is the difference between a football crowd
and the adequately informed spectator of
painting? Does taking visual imagery from
popular culture out of context and placing it in
the context of painting, reveal anything new
about the meaning of that imagery?
