Outline of Todays presentation
  • What is SARI and the SARI Survey?
  • Effectiveness of current survey techniques
  • The Good Vs. The Bad
  • How can we increase response rate for 2004?
  • The best route for the next year
  • QA session

3
What is SARI and the SARI Survey ?
  • SARI Student Affairs Research and Information
  • Administers census surveys (Davis QE2Q) of the
    undergraduate student population every three
    years
  • Collect educational experience, academic and
social interests, and UCD program evaluations
  • The QE2Q is the most valuable source of
    information for departmental decisions

4
Todays Survey Situation
  • SARI has migrated to the use of Electronic Survey
    Administration
  • Cost reduction
  • Survey the whole student population
  • 53 response rate
  • Efficient data analysis
  • Reduce collection time
  • But, this introduces systematic problems
  • Spam prevention filters
  • Computer confidence (distrust of Internet)
  • Unknown survey reality (depersonalize surveys)
  • Easy to brush-off survey invitations

5
THE BIG
QUESTION
6
How Can We Maximize Response Rate for 2004?
  • UC Davis suggests it is increasingly difficult
to reach and maintain historic response rates
  • Response rate of 53 is good, but 54 is better

7
Proposed Ideas
  • Ideas
  • General Big Ticket Prizes
  • Group Specific Prizes
  • Style of Survey Advertising i.e. Survey
    Packaging
  • Discredit Survey Myths and Fears
  • Early response rewards / Early advertising

8
You May Think Cash Prizes !!!

Previous Survey Results
Other
One drawing for the entire 2500
Two drawings, each for 1250
Three drawings, each for 833.33
4 equal cash drawings
A Tiered prize plan should be used
University shouldn't offer such money prizes
10
Is this the best method of encouraging survey
support?
Previous Results
  • Students prefer more favorable odds
  • Lottery-type was selected by 9 of respondents
  • 8 of students believe no incentive prizes
    should be offered

Students Apathy
Stop spamming me! Answering this survey wont
benefit me! I dont see any clear
incentives My opinions will affect my school
records! If he did not answer it, why should
I?
19
Survey Apathy
Focus groups voiced doubts as to whether or not
the polls had any actual impact and significance
Are the prizes targeted to you? (n25)
20
Encouraging early response
Week 1
Week 2
  • The 1st weeks response rate is a good predictor
    of student turnout
  • Advantages to people who answer early
  • Roll-over prize winning chances

21
Should earlier responders have a greater chance
of winning prizes? N25
22
3 Methods of Rewarding Early Responses
  • Rollover
  • Bonus chance
  • Second chance

23
Rollover
  • Those who answer the 1st week can get all the
    prizes
  • Those who answer the 2nd week can only get prizes
offered the 2nd week and after

24
Bonus Chances
  • Give the people that answer earlier more chances
    to win prizes
  • Example Raffle Tickets
  • Early responders have more raffle tickets vs.
late responders that only get 1

25
Second Chance
  • Everyone has a chance at the 1st prize
  • 1st week responders qualify for the 2nd prize
  • 2nd week responders qualify for the 3rd prize

26
Whats a good way to reward early responders? n25

Recommendation
  • Allow early responders to win more prizes
  • Increase winning probability with more prizes
  • Money talks - allocate cash prizes in
    appealing denominations (750) (according to
    previous surveys)

28
Recommendation
  • More Aggressive Advertising in strategic columns
in the Aggie Newspaper, but the chalkboard
approach is extremely efficient (2nd on our Quick
    Poll)
