Title: Anatomy from Renaissance to Revolution

1
  • Anatomy from Renaissance to Revolutiona
    sordid past!
  • Anatomical history all began in the Middle Ages
with a Greek physician called Claudius Galan
    (129-216AD).
  • This Greek physician was dubbed the Prince of
Physicians and his collection of sketches held
as a Grays Anatomy of the Ancient World until
    approximately 1500 years later.
  • HOWEVER.there was a slight problem. Galans
drawings were based on the anatomy of dogs rather
than that of humans. Galan assumed they were the
    sameas you do.
  • So, during the 16th century, despite bans on
dissection by the Church, HUGE discoveries were
    made.
  • Leonardo da Vinci was a main figurehead of these
    discoveries whose SECRET preoccupation with
morgues led to the production of many images of
    human anatomy which challenged Galans.
  • However, the physician Vesalius was the first to
openly state, upon reading Galans texts," These
are pictures of animals not humans!, and set to
proving Galans longstanding medical theories as
    utterly false.
  • Vesalius wrote his own text, entitled De Humani
Corporis Fabrica (The Fabric of Human
Anatomy), which replaced Galans as gold in the
medical arena. See Vesaliuss Muscle Men
pictures from the De Humani Corporis Fabrica
  • Of course, other physicians and students then
went on to challenge some of Vesaliuss theories
and the study of anatomy flourished during the
    17th and 18th centuries.
  • Famous artists like Michelangelo and Rembrandt
started to study anatomy, attend dissections and
    publish drawings for money.
  • Dissections were still banned, but it was
    perfectly legal to attend them
  • THUS, what Vesalius had started was now
progressing throughout the medical world. People
wanted the truth. Anatomy was progressing!
