  • D-Day. June 6, 1944.
  • Allied forces land at Normandy, France in the
    first major assault on German territory.
  • Eventually, the Allies would liberate France and
    establish a new front along the Netherlands,
    Belgium, and Luxembourg.

  • II. The same year, Roosevelt defeats Thomas Dewey
    for an unprecedented fourth term as president.
  • A. Dewey claimed that after 12 years of New
    Dealism, it was time for a change.
  • B. The CIO, a group of union members, campaigned
    for Roosevelt, using the question What were you
    doing in 1932?.
  • 1. This was a direct reference to the Great
    Depression, and a subtle scare tactic.
  • C. Roosevelt won 432 to 99 in the electoral
    college.
  • D. Overall, Roosevelt won because the war was
    going well.

  • III. By late 1944, Germany was all but defeated.
  • A. Hitler tried one last gamble, an attempt to
    take over the port town of Antwerp in Belgium,
    which was a vital supply line for the allies.
  • B. Germany threw nearly all of his reserves into
    the offensive, creating a bulge in the allied
    lines. The battle was called The Battle of the
    Bulge
  • C. The allies won this battle, and Germany would
    spend the last 4 months of the war in retreat.
  • D. Hitler commits suicide on April 30, 1945, and
    Germany officially surrenders on May 7, 1945.

  • IV. The Pacific theatre.
  • A. After Germany surrenders, the Allies were
    tightening the noose around the island of Japan.
  • B. The Potsdam Conference
  • 1. In July 1945, Truman met with Stalin and
    British leaders and issued an ultimatum to the
    Japanese surrender or be totally destroyed
  • C. At this time, the United States was
    completing research into the development of
    nuclear weapons, known as the Manhattan Project.
    July 16, 1945 the first nuclear device is
    detonated in New Mexico.
  • D. August 6, 1945 Hiroshima. August 9, 1945
    Nagasaki. August 10, 1945 Japan surrenders,
    ending World War II.
