Wainwrights Magnet Program

• Wainwrights magnet program has a long history.
  It was started in 1975 as an extended school day
  science and math program for 3rd through 5th
  grade students.
• It was one of the original magnet programs in
  Houston ISD and the only one for 3rd -5th grade
  students.
• Racial Mixed students were bused from all over
  the city to attend.

Magnet Classes

• Mixed age groups of students attended hands-on
  modules.
• Modules with an emphasis on discovery learning
  changed every 3 weeks.
• Students picked modules according to their
  interest.
• Science Labs including running water and lab
  equipment were added to the school.
• Fieldtrips to NASA and The Houston Museum of
  Science became part of the program.

Todays Magnet Program

• Includes a K-2 program added 2 years ago.
• Has bilingual magnet classes.
• Is a math science program with a technology
  component.
