Kindergarten Open House A day in the life of
a Kindergartner

Essential Information
  • Arrival Time 725 (Late bell rings at 745)
  • On the first day, it is okay for you to walk your
    child into class. However, we are asking that
    your child use his/her regular transportation
    mode after Tuesday. A quick good-bye makes for
    dry eyes.
  • Your child will be receiving a transportation
    bracelet if he/she will be a bus or car rider.
    Please make sure that your child wears this
    EVERYDAY for the first two weeks of school. In
    addition to the transportation bracelets, please
    make sure that your child is wearing his/her
    classroom name tag for the first two weeks.
  • If your child will be in ASP, (After School
    Program) please make sure that you fill out the
    red enrollment form.
  • Starting this year, your child will be able to
    bring a water bottle on the bus.
  • Please make sure you establish a consistent mode
    of transportation for your child beginning
    Tuesday, August 5th.

Snack Lunch - Ice Cream
  • Please provide your child with one healthy snack
    each day. Clearly label the snack with your
    childs name.
  • Lunch is 1.65. An account can be set up through
    Meal Pay so you can pay online. Meal Pay can be
    found on Libertys website.
  • Ice cream costs 0.75. To avoid confusion,
    please make sure your childs ice cream money is
    separate from his/her lunch money. Exact change
    is required for ice cream.

Agendas/Red Daily Folder
  • ALL communication should be written in your
    childs agenda on the correct date. This
    includes transportation changes, excuses for
    being absent, and any other important notes for
    the teacher.
  • Please check and clean out your childs red daily
    folder each day. This folder will contain
    important information from both the teacher and
    school.
  • Both the agenda and red folder should be brought
    to school every day.

Specials Recess
  • Your child will be attending specials from
    1045-1125. Your childs teacher will be
    sending home your class schedule.
  • We offer PE, Music, Art, Computer, and
    Counseling.
  • On the days your class has PE, tennis shoes are
    required.
  • We also encourage your child to wear tennis shoes
    to school on a regular basis due to the wood
    chips on the playground. We are active all day
    and moving about the classroom, and tennis shoes
    are the safest shoes to wear.

Kindergarten
  • Sometimes looking into a kindergarten
    classroom is a bit like looking into a beehive 
    the uninformed visitor might see lots of bees
    moving in many directions with no apparent logic,
    but the beekeeper knows what each bee is doing
    and how an activity fits within the overall
    pattern.

Kindergarten
  • Kindergarten is very different from other grade
    levels.
  • We change activities every 20 minutes.
  • We are active learners.
  • We never teach anything in isolation. You will
    find reading, math and writing in every activity
    that is taught.
  • We learn in a playful way with a wide variety of
    materials.

  • Reading is getting material from the printed
    word.

Math
  • The Kindergarten mathematics curriculum
    provides students with experiences that help them
    practice concepts like number recognition,
    counting, patterns, graphs, sorting, time, money,
    addition, and subtraction.

Writing
  • Allows each child to work on a level that is
    appropriate for him/her.
  • Some children are already able to write
    independently, while others need support that we
    are able to provide to the extent it is needed.
  • Ultimately, our goal is for the children to write
    with sensible phonetic spelling also known as
    inventive spelling.
  • We do not expect conventional spelling of words
    other than those we have on our word wall.

Writing Skill Targets
  • Beginning a sentence with a capital letter and
    ending with an end mark
  • Writing left to right, top to bottom
  • Spacing between each word
  • Drawing a detailed picture to match written
    text
  • Sounding out words independently
  • Discuss beg., middle and end of the year
    samples. I didnt include the samples on the main
    presentation.

Spelling
  • In Kindergarten, spelling is taught on a daily
    basis.  For example, when we "write together", we
    spell sight words together.  As the year
    progresses, students will be introduced to word
    families and their spelling patterns. Spelling,
    as a subject, is not formally taught in
    Kindergarten.
