Background
  • Radiation therapy began in 1895 when Roentgen
    discovered the x-ray
  • Early advances involved developing new radiation
    sources, learning about radiation delivery doses,
    and creating high voltage electron accelerators
  • Major advances from 1980s to present
    incorporating 3D imaging (CT, MR) with radiation
    therapy to develop conformal treatment planning
    in humans

  • Recent advances in small animal imaging (microCT,
    microMR) have not been followed up by the
    inception of 3D conformal radiation therapy
  • Current radiation therapy in small animals is
    analogous to human therapy from the 1950s

  • Current small animal irradiation is out of date
    with todays conformal, three-dimensional
    radiation therapy
  • A conformal small animal irradiator (microRT)
    could be used in preclinical micro-imaging and
    radiobiology to evaluate the response of tumors
    to therapeutic doses of radiation and the
    efficacy of radiation treatment plans
