Frezenberg Memorial Project
  • Purpose. To preserve and improve the regimental
marker at Frezenberg, site of the Battle of
    Frezenberg in 1915.
  • Background. The current marker is in a corner of
several farm roads on Patricia Way. It consists
of a round bench, accessed from the Way by a
short walkway, in the middle of which in a
circular centre was originally planted a Canadian
Maple. The Maple outgrew the centre and died,
and eventually a replacement was planted about 15
yards to the North of the marker. The Maple now
flourishes. There are two plaques there, one on
the bench indicating the original battle outlines
and one marking the activities there at the 50th
anniversary. The site is maintained by the
Commonwealth War Graves and the land immediately
around the site is farmed, up close to the marker
by local farmers who lease the land.

13
Frezenberg Memorial Project
  • Rationale. The 100th anniversary of the Battle
of Frezenberg, 8 May 2015, will mark the end of
the 100th Anniversary commemorations for PPCLI.
A major effort to ensure that the Frezenberg site
continues to honour the Originals and to
connect current generations of Patricias with
the oldest generation is a feature. Elements
will of this will be to bring some of the
Antecedents to Frezenberg, as well as the
Centennial Torch, which will have been carried
across Canada from the current Home Station to
the first encampment at Lansdowne, through the
generations of hands in front of the nation and
thence to Frezenberg, where it will be lodged as
the Memorial Torch for the 8 May commemoration.

Centennial Torch
  • Purpose. To design and produce a Centennial
Torch to be used as part of the 100th Anniversary
    Celebrations
  • Rationale. In the National Reunion, a Centennial
Torch will be lighted and presented at the
Dedication Service from the Association to a
soldier of the Regiment, who will carry it to the
National Parade of Rededication in Ottawa during
the Ottawa Commemoration, where the torch will be
passed and shared with the nation and with the
Antecedents of the Originals. It will then be
taken to Frezenberg, where it will be used in
that ceremony. The Centennial Torch will then be
returned to Edmonton and mounted somewhere in the
    Garrison.

consideration the Torchs employment for the
Torch Relay, the Frezenberg Celebration and the
Torchs final location in Edmonton, an outline
implementation plan and proposed budget for
approval by the 61st AGM in 2009

Memorial Element
  • Purpose. This will be a memorial element to
recognize the sacrifices of those who have served
    on recent operations.
  • Rationale. Recognition of individuals will
continue to be accomplished in the Hall of Honour
in the Regimental Museum. This memorial element
will acknowledge the Regiments participation and
losses that are not otherwise recognized on other
memorial elements in the Hamilton Gault Memorial
Park. The new memorial element is to be unveiled
at the Dedication Service as part of the 100th
Anniversary on Sunday, 10 August 2014.
  • Concept. This memorial element could be a
stand-alone item or an addition to an existing
one. It has been suggested that a large stone
limestone wall surmounted on the back of the
current flag display, with appropriate campaign
or operational names featured each to their own
block, might be the basis for the memorial
    element.

29
Association Benevolent Fund
  • Proposed by the SW Ontario Branch at the 59th AGM

30
Association Benevolent Fund
  • Purpose. To create of a Benevolent Fund with
broad terms of reference that provides continuing
support for Association Good Works. The
proposal envisages that a 100th Anniversary
signature project be implemented from this fund.
  • Rationale. The Association has limited
flexibility with respect to the finds that it
raises and that are held in the HGMF. Most have
strings attached. This fund would be developed
to provide more flexibility. Fundraising to
perpetuate the fund would be an ongoing activity
up to and after the 100th Anniversary.

31
Association Benevolent Fund
  • Funds Objects. To provide moral and material
support to Association members and their
families, to soldiers of the Regiment (with an
emphasis on casualties), and to retired veterans
of the Regiment and their families and to units
    of the Regiment on operations.

32
Association Benevolent Fund
  • Potential Signature Projects
  • Donation to support recreational or medical
facilities in rehab or veterans care hospitals.
  • Donations to organizations providing family
accommodations in or near rehab or veterans care
    hospitals.
  • Donations to support the provision of counselling
    services not provided through another
    organization or agency.
  • Grants to offset family travel costs to visit
Association members, veterans and casualties in
    hospital.

35
Money!
  • Anything that the Assn agrees to support will
cost money and will require fundraising
  • Basic Fundraising Principle
  • Spend other peoples money first!
  • Fundraising will require central coordination and
the combined effort of all Branches

36
Fundraising Strategies
  • Participate with the Regular component in a
Regimental Foundation framework with a 5
    million fundraising target by 2014
  • Fundraise independently as the Association to
meet the goal established by the combined
    estimate of agreed projects
  • Fundraise by project
  • Fundraise by Branch

37
Fundraising Sources(not an exhaustive list)
  • Engage government agencies to support specific
    projects (VAC for Frezenberg)
  • Apply for grants from all levels of government
  • Corporate sponsorship/donations
  • Branch fundraising activities (charity
    bingos/casinos, etc)
