Title: What Are Artificial Reefs and Why do We Need Them
1What Are Artificial Reefs and Why do We Need Them?
2An artificial reef is anything from the size of a
beer can to something as large as a ship
3Most of my undersea world here on the Gulf Coast
is a flat sandy desert with no visible life, sort
of like the beaches used to look before Condos
4Put something here and within weeks things start
to grow
5A few months later small marine animals show up
6More and more marine life begin to make this home

9Then more neighbors move in and sometimes I have
them over for lunch. By now we have become a mini
self- sustaining ecosystem living off itself and
producing surplus marine animals to help resupply
our fishery

17Do Reefs Really Help?
FACT Alabamas recreational catch of Red Snapper
in 1986 was close to zero, today over 40 of all
the recreational Snapper in the Gulf of Mexico
are caught in Alabama. Not bad, considering
Alabama only has 1.5 of the coastline. This is
all due Alabamas artificial reef program that
started in 1986.
18But, all reefs are not the same, the old days of
this are over, keep your junk at home and send us
quality material, durable, well made reef units
that hold up to storms events and dont sink
into the sand.
