The research team
  • We, as a class decided on the topic for our
research of Every Child Matters (but with some
    help from Mr Jones!)
  • Mr Jones helped us to organise our time and
trained us up in how to interview children,
    teachers and observe lessons.

3
Our school is very cool!
  • Friends
  • Teachers
  • Subjects
  • Lessons
  • Its what we do that counts
  • Responsibility
  • SHEEP

Our Focus

Brow Church of England Primary School? (lets see!)

5
Why did we choose this focus?
  • Do our teachers understand about Every Child
    Matters?
  • We want to use this project to help evaluate our
school and how good we are.
  • Mr Jones has spoken to us quite a lot about Every
Child Matters and we wanted to understand how
    its going to help us.
  • Oh and Mr Jones said it would be a good idea!

6
So what does Every Child Matters mean?
  • At our school we have the right to be SAFE

How good are we at keeping children safe?
  • We talk about the school rules to make sure they
    are fair and appropriate
  • We look after each other and make sure that
    everyone is happy
  • We never open outside doors to anyone.
  • Our teachers always do things called risk
assessments when we go on school trips
  • We asked a sample of 30 children if they felt
safe at school, 5 children said they did not.
What will we do about this?
  • Weve realised that to be safe we need to learn
    how to be safe
  • We keep safe in school by
  • Knowing the school rules
  • Listening to teachers and adults
  • Making sure that all outside doors are kept
    locked
  • Stranger danger talks

How good are we at keeping children Healthy?
  • We talk about Healthy lifestyles in PSHE and have
    weeks called Healthy Week

    toes!
  • We have lots of after school clubs to keep us
    healthy
  • We must be a healthy school because we have the
    Healthy Schools Award!!
  • We looked at a sample of 30 lunch boxes 18 lunch
boxes were what we thought to be healthy. What
else do we need to do to help children bring
    healthy lunch boxes?
  • We encourage children to have healthy lunches
  • We make sure that we do 2 lessons of PE every
    week
  • We run around at playtimes!
  • Key Stage One children have fruit and vegetables
    at break times

  • The dinner ladies make sure we have at least one
    vegetable at dinnertimes

    through the day

How good are we in making children enjoy and
achieve at our school?
  • Enjoyment
  • We observed lessons in school and found lots of
    interesting things! lesson observation BB
  • lesson observation JB
  • Mrs Sweeney also observes lessons to make sure
    teachers are planning interesting lessons
  • We interviewed some children, this is they said
  • We have got better at attendance, we love the
assembly so its obvious we enjoy coming to
    school!
  • We like our teachers because they try their best
  • We have fun
  • We laugh a lot in school. We think this means we
are happy and enjoy being there
  • We think the teachers look after our school and
    enjoy doing lessons
  • We have lots of friends
  • Our teachers have to make sure our lessons are
exciting or Mrs Sweeney will tell them off!
  • We asked a sample of 30 children whether they
enjoy school, 30 children said they did!

13
Continued..
  • Achieve
  • We found all pupils try their best and are
successful in their targets and goals
  • We have to do SATs
  • Targets in lessons
  • Our own goals
  • We all live under the same sky, but we don't all
have the same horizon. Mr. Jones keeps saying
this to us, so we thought wed better mention it!
  • We asked a sample of 30 children if they thought
they achieved well at school, 21 children said
they thought they did. Why do 9 children think
    they dont?

14
Economic Well Being Research Team
  • Joe Bibby
  • Kerri Mather
  • Sadie Malkin
  • Jack McCullogh

15
How good are we at teaching and Learning Economic
Well being?
  • Mr Jones said this one was the hardest to do!
  • We believe we hit this by
  • Having to write a letter of application to work
    in the school office
  • Having an interview to get a job
  • Selling tuck at playtimes
  • We are given responsibilities around school
  • We can become members of our school council to
    have a greater pupil voice
  • We asked a sample of 30 children whether they
thought our teachers prepared us for getting jobs
when we leave school, 24 children said they did.
Why are 6 children unsure about having the
ability to get a job when they leave school?

16
Making a positive Contribution Research Team
  • Eleanor Leach
  • Nicole Hodges
  • Dean Cobb
  • Sean Jackson
  • Declan Carter

17
How good are we at teaching and learning about
making a positive contribution?
  • We found that all children want to take
responsibility for our school, we should all have
    jobs to do
  • School council we think this could be called
    Pupil Voice
  • Playground Leaders
  • Numeracy day coaching by Year 6 children
  • Lunchtime monitors
  • Blue and Yellow badge holders
  • Working in the office at dinnertimes
  • Responsibilities in class like register monitors
  • We found that children all through school like to
    be given responsibility.
  • We also found that some children said it made
    them behave better
  • Through our research there is something we want
all teachers to do for us. We found that all
children we interviewed thought the important
jobs were always given to the same children and
some children were never given jobs. We would
like everyone to have a fair chance. Please dont
give the same children all of the jobs. Out of a
sample of 30 children, 30 children said this was
the case. What should we do about it?

18
Our strengths
  • Most children feel safe at school
  • Our School has important strategies in place to
    make us safe at school
  • Most children are healthy at school
  • All children are encouraged to be healthy at
    school.
  • All children (those interviewed!) enjoy school
  • Most children think they achieve well at school
  • Lessons observed show excellent achievement of
    children
  • Most children believe we give them a good start
    in finding a good job
  • Our school has given many children an excellent
    experience of learning
  • All children interviewed thought important jobs
were always given to the same children
  • Our school has very good reward systems in place
and teachers do try their best

19
Developments
  • How do we address the issues our research has
    thrown up?
  • We need to look at these issues with our
children, teachers, parents governors to see if
    they have any ideas
  • We would like to show children, teachers, parents
and governors what we have found and celebrate
it, because we do have a lot to celebrate about
    our school. We love it!

20
Plenary
  • What have we learnt by doing this research?
  • Lots of things we didnt know about our school
  • How to observe lessons and teachers
  • How to interview children
